Today we celebrate one of nature’s hardest workers, the bee.

Small in size but extraordinary in impact, bees are vital to healthy ecosystems and are responsible for pollinating around a third of the food we eat. Their quiet, constant work often goes unnoticed, yet it is essential to life as we know it.

Through collective effort, they help sustain landscapes, support biodiversity, and play a role in feeding both people and wildlife, moving as one intricate system where every individual contributes to something far greater than itself.

On World Bee Day, we’re reminded that there is something we can learn from them. Meaningful change rarely happens through one action alone, but through many working together towards something bigger than themselves.

Today, on Endangered Species Day, we take a moment to highlight species that are under threat across the world. Some still exist in healthy pockets, while others are on the brink of extinction.

Every animal has a role to play within its ecosystem, and the health of those ecosystems affects all of us on a global scale. From vultures helping control disease to elephants shaping the land around them, the absence of these animals is often only truly felt once they are gone.

We all share a responsibility towards the health of this planet, our home. If future generations are to have any chance of seeing gorillas, rhinos, and other endangered species in the wild, we need to work together. Whether through big actions or small ones, every action has an impact on the future.

Team bean is currently on assignment in the South African bushveld, we had one of those unexpected moments that comes with working in the wild. While filming a scene with rangers, a curious hyena slowly approached us. As we stepped back, we realised we had left a bag on the ground.

The hyena wandered over, gave it a sniff, a small nibble with its teeth, and then casually carried on with its day. For a moment, it honestly felt like he just wanted to be part of the scene too.

Mothers.

In every corner of our world, there is this quiet thread:
love, protection, teaching, comforting, carrying, guiding.

A mother elephant waiting for her calf.
A bird feeding hungry mouths.
A woman holding her child while she works.
A hand on a shoulder.
A glance.
A presence.

So much of motherhood happens in the in-between moments that often go unnoticed.
The constant giving.
The worry. The intuition. The softness.
The strength.

Today we celebrate mothers in all forms - human and wild - and the deep instinct to nurture, protect, and love.

Happy Mother’s Day ❤️

While on assignment in Mahale National Park, one of our main objectives was to document the chimpanzees of this region. As we moved through the forest, we started to notice just how present they are, hearing them before we saw them and watching how they move and interact around us.

On one occasion, we spotted them using sticks to fish for ants, a small but remarkable reminder of their intelligence and how closely connected we are to them. It is something we will not easily forget.

Over the weekend was Veterinarian Day, and today we celebrate Hyena Day.

It reminded us of a moment we captured with the Grumeti Fund vet team as they responded to a hyena caught in a snare, carefully assessing and treating the wound. Seeing it get back on its feet and move off into the wild again was a powerful reminder of what that intervention means in a place like this.

Hyenas are built to endure, adapting to constant pressure in the wild, while vets step in when situations like snares put them at risk. Both play a role in keeping ecosystems functioning, one through survival, the other through protection.

Today we celebrate the flightless and rather fancy ocean birds. From our time filming around the Antarctic Peninsula, we were reminded just how full of character penguins are, constantly moving between land and sea, completely at home in both.

World Penguin Day is a small moment to appreciate these birds and the environments they depend on, and a reminder of how important it is to protect the wild places they call home.

Across Africa, many children grow up living close to national parks, yet rarely have the chance to visit or learn about the wildlife and conservation work happening there.

Organisations like Lessons in Conservation help bridge that gap, connecting young people to the landscapes on their doorstep.

It’s work that truly matters, because these children are the future custodians of these wild places, with the potential to one day protect and shape the reserves within their own communities.

To be a game ranger in Africa is to live a life shaped by purpose, but also by sacrifice in ways most people never see. Rangers stand on the front line of the fight against the illegal wildlife trade, a war that rarely makes headlines but is felt deeply on the ground every single day.

In this work, duty is not just a word, it is something lived and relied on. Discipline and structure within ranger teams often make the difference between life and loss. We continue to meet rangers on assignments who give far more than they take, people who show a level of selflessness, courage, and quiet strength that stays with us long after we leave the bush.

Walking alongside the Maasai people, it becomes clear that their connection to the wild runs deep. What might take others years to learn comes naturally here; it’s an awareness of the land, the animals, and the rhythms that shape life around them.
