La Barra, Spanish meaning “The Bar” is the traditional way to eat and drink in Spain. Fred and Mike set out to offer Capetonians a traditional Spanish tapas bar and they have certainly done so with their new spot in Long Market street aptly named: La Barra. I say this not because I’m Spanish and know what I’m talking about but because I went to La Barra with a Spaniard who tells me that this is the real deal. La Barra is offering 4 pintxos or tapas plus a beer or glass of wine for R99 plus a Flamenco show which lends even greater authenticity to the experience. The Flamenco is offered up by a local studio called SoloFlamenco and had us stomping our feet and clapping hands along with them and even trying out the moves afterwards which was utterly unsuccessful.
There are a variety of pintxos and tapas on offer; a few of the things we ate were: Spanish tortilla, an amazing vegetable tempura, sobrasada (raw cured chorizo which spreads like a pate), pork rillette on toast, gambas (prawns), potatas bravas, marinated olives and churros.
R99 for all of that is an absolute bargain and in a world where I feel increasing ripped off everywhere I go, the generosity was refreshing and greatly appreciated. Mike and the guys in back of house did a fine job, the food was hot, the drinks were cold, there was no fuss or nonsense about it. Fred on front of house was unrattled, hospitable, attentive and chivalrous.
Well done guys, I hope you have a long and happy time running La Barra and you’ll be seeing me again.
