Out in Africa - South African Gay and Lesbian Film Festival

Out in Africa - South African Gay and Lesbian Film Festival Next Festival 13 to 16 November 2014 - Cinema Nouveua V&A and Rosebank JHB The Festival set out to address the lack of visibility of Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex individuals (LGBTIs) in South African social and cultural life after decades of apartheid repression, to counter negative images of LGBTIs that prevail in traditional and religious communities, and to serve as a platform for discussion and debate about the situation of LGBTIs in a newly founded democracy.

The purpose of the Festival is to showcase films from around the world, and to stimulate and promote a home-grown film industry. As a socially conscious movement with a political purpose, OIA must generate images and representations of its own community that promote a sense of belonging and pride – films that explore our particular identity, lifestyles and concerns. OIA has organised 5 filmmaking

"A striking departure from anything we have seen in South African cinema, Catherine Stewart’s film explores the discrepancy between the country’s enlightened new constitution towards gender and sexuality, and deeply engrained societal and class attitudes.

Tightly drawn, very provocative and brimming with unbridled raw storytelling energy, While You Weren’t Looking opens doors of perception into a world we haven’t explored before."

27th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival

SYNOPSIS: South Africa led the world with its all embracing Constitution, granting homosexuals unprecedented freedoms and rights. This feature, produced by the Out In Africa Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, takes a look at South Africa through the lives and experiences of a cross section of Cape Town queers.

Dez and Terri, a mixed-race couple married 20 years and adoptive parents, they are the trailblazing lesbians of the New South Africa. But, have these freedoms guaranteed them happiness?

Asanda, their 18 year old adopted daughter, is the poster child for South Africa's diversity but describes herself as "an experiment", being made up as she goes along. She meets Shado, an enigmatic Tommy Boy from Khayalitsha, a township on the edge of Cape Town, and a different picture of the New South Africa emerges.

Beautifully shot on locations in and around Cape Town in 24 days, with a stellar South African cast and a line up of great local music and the work of South African artists on display.

Funded by The National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund, with additional finance from The Department of Trade & Industry and a grant from The Other Foundation.

Darkstar (Aiden Whalley & James Young) will be coming to the shores of Cape Town and the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg in June 2016. The duo has made great contributions to the UK’s electronic scene. The tour will take place from the 5th to the 12th of June.

During their visit to South Africa they will meet with South Africans young and old with the sole purpose of listening to their stories whilst documenting the various voices from different walks of life. The recordings will then be infused into their music to be played in their shows on the 11th and 12th of June 2016 in Johannesburg and Cape Town respectively. This will allow the music to be deeply influenced by the people and stories they encounter.

This project was inspired by the already completed Foam Island - the band’s third studio LP, which is a moving contemporary electronic pop album handling themes around hope against odds in the modern world. They started the project whilst visiting family in Northern England, documenting local young people’s experiences in Huddersfield for 3 months.

British Council has made the project possible through the Connect ZA programme whose primary aim is creating opportunities for young people in South Africa & UK through the arts sector.

Thanks to a collaboration with Red Bull Cape Town, during their visit they will be collaborating with local artists such as Dj Fosta and Dunn Kidda. Additionally they will be sharing the stage with local talent such as Micr.Pluto, Maramza and Vox Portent.

The show in Johannesburg will take place at Good Luck Bar on Saturday and the Cape Town show will take place at The Assembly Bar on Sunday.

The band is looking forward to connecting with new people and exploring similarities between young people in South Africa and Northern England.

Encounters, British Council Connect ZA and Red Bull are excited about the potential of new connections, collaborations and various cultural exchanges that may come of the visit.

Coming to THE LABIA - 6th - 19th November. The wonderful films of Argentinian filmmaker PABLO CESAR who
1. Specializes in Argentinian/African co-productions
2. Only shoots his films on 35mm
3. His films are imbued with mythological and spiritual influences - the golden thread that joins all religion and mythology
This programme is a fascinating journey into the work of a very special and independent filmmaker. Local filmmakers would do well to take note.

PABLO CESAR

Born in Buenos Aires, he began filmmaking at the age of 13 shooting films on a Super 8mm camera given to him by his mother who also taught him about filmmaking techniques. Between 1975 and 1984, he shot 20 short films and 2 features all on Super 8mm. Thereafter he has shot 9 feature films all shot on 35mm, preferring the aesthetics of film to digital processes. Specialising in co-producing with Africa, he has shot films in Tunisia, Cape Verde, Mali, Ethiopia and Angola. His next film will be shot in Namibia. He counts as a major influence, the Italian filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini

JOHANNESBURG PRIDE 2015 PRESENTS

26th Annual Johannesburg Pride event is set to take place on 31 October 2015 at Wanderers (35 Corlett drive) Starts 10am. Here are all the details of the events, the street parade and what this year’s theme is all about

Johannesburg Pride has grown into the Africa's oldest and largest Pride event.

Despite the legal protection of the LGBTIAQ+ minorities, approved by the Constitutional Court on 4 December 1996, underscores universal human rights to all who reside in South Africa, prohibiting inter alia discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender – then the first of its kind in the world, social prejudice and stigmatisation remains and over the years we have unfortunately seen a constant of LGBTIAQ-phobia. Those include verbal intimidation, refusal of service as well as violence perpetrated against the LGBTIAQ+ persons tantamount to hate crimes.

Johannesburg Pride theme :
is about not judging a person for who they are, embracing diversity and to have tolerance for who they are. Many face harassment, imprisonment or the death penalty just for being different. No matter where in the world you are we all should live in harmony and respect for each other as a diverse human race.

The Parade will start at 12pm from Wanderers Down Corlett drive towards Melrose arch and through Melrose arch back to Wanderers .Johannesburg Pride has for the past 3 years not included floats in the parade as we are promoting equality and no division should be felt in the parade as well as going back to our roots of how Pride began, also we are keeping up with the modern era of being eco firiendly. We do urge pride attendees to create banners and placards of messages that carries a political stance on LGBTQ+ issues.

Expect a crowd-pleasing line up of entertainment at Wanderers which features a exciting line-up of fabulous pre & post parade offerings that includes DJ's,bands, dancers, vocal artists,a drag show and comdedian Schalk Bezhuidenhout as MC.
General entrance is free and VIP club house tickets are on sale which include,Private bar,Private Lavatory facilities, Complimentary chicken/beef shawarma + coldrink,Club house area with balcony view of the event.Limited tickets available at R200 to book yours, email [email protected]
