This looks DELICIOUS!!!

A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder which will be on at The Masque and Milnerton Playhouse.

I am checking with the creative team - but I don't think it has been staged yet in South Africa. Perhaps it has been staged by a college? Anyone out there - involved in staging it?

The musical won four Tony Awards in 2024, including two major awards - Best Musical and Best Book.

It is a about a man who is broke. He could inherit a family fortune. But there are others in line who will inherit before him. That means he needs to bump off eight relatives. Rave reviews include: “…morbidly hilarious” - USA Today.

Sounds yummy.

Magically amazing news is that students and graduates of the College of Magic in Cape Town, will be performing in a razzle dazzle family magic production, Makin’ Magic, at Artscape, on June 6 and 7, 2026.

Note – there are only four performances. This annual family show, tends to sell out - so BOOK.

Makin’ Magic combines illusion, comedy and storytelling and takes place “in the eccentric laboratory of the brilliant but slightly chaotic Professor, played by Cape Town actor Matthew Baldwin.”

Congrats to the Byron Bure Academy of Theatre Arts (BBATA), which is celebrating a decade on the boards in Cape Town. As part of the 10th anniversary celebrations, BBATA is staging Jason Robert Brown’s acclaimed Songs for a New World. The song cycle, was first performed in 1994. It was revived in 2018, with minor tweaks, explains director Byron Groenewald-Bure. “We're doing the 2018 version. The original had a cast of four. We are doing it with 13. We have gender-bent some roles but the overall message stays the same.”

Director: Byron Groenewald-Bure
Assistant director: Tara Macpherson
Musical director: Casey Wallace
Choreography: Jessica de Bod and Wendy Henrique
Physical theatre: Luyanda Jantjies

The text, based on the diaries of Vaslav Nijinsky, was written by Johnson, Lara Bye and Karen Jeynes; with musical arrangement and composition by Johnson and direction is by Lara Bye. The dark, moving and tender, Vaslav premiered in 2019 and was nominated for four Fleur du Cap awards.

It is a beautiful show -dark and complex - like Vaslav - evoked by the brilliant Godfrey at the piano and singing.

Your Perfect Life - the play.

Who has a perfect life?

Be careful for what you wish. For women it is heightened, with societal expectations that they should get married, ditch the career (or dial back at least) and have babies.

Erika Breytenbach and Faeron Wheeler are friends and colleagues in the theatre industry and drawing on aspects of their own lives, in 2019, they wrote Your Perfect Life, exploring choices and outcomes.

They also perform in the comedic play, which received two Standard Bank Ovation Awards at National Arts Festival Makhanda– one award was for a live staging (2019) and the other was for a digital iteration (2020), during the pandemic.

I have seen the play on several occasions, including one when we were still in lockdown (October 2020) and we had to wear masks and be socially distanced from each other. I look forward to the 2026 Your Perfect Life, which has been tweaked and updated. It is on at two venues - The Drama Factory (April 16-18) and the Masque (April 23 to 25).

The Royal Countess Zingara - review is up - the season in Cape Town, ends May 17. No worries re FOMO for Joburg audiences .

The Royal Countess will tour to Joburg to Melrose Arch at end of June.

Fabulous evening of theatre, dining and lots of fun partying after the show. It is an experience, destination theatre and dining.

The Zingara team recently received the accolade as Top Experience Journey at the Restaurant Association of South Africa (RASA) Awards, which took place in Johannesburg (March 2026). Read on and you will get a sense of “Experience Journey” and the immersion of theatre, food and sideshow. So deserved.

As I note in my review - keep your eyes open for the array of Circus Sideshow such as the confession booth in the foyer.

Exciting!

Two plays by Gavin Werner will be on at Masque Theatre in Cape Town. April 8-18.

Gavin’s new play, Meeting Murphy will be staged concurrently with his acclaimed play, Spanish Steps.

Spanish Steps received the 2025 award at (The Writers Guild of South Africa), the Muse award for Best Produced play.

Bravo to Gavin for writing, staging and producing plays.

And here we have TWO of his plays in one season.

is coming to the Baxter Theatre.

Short season April 1-4.

Love the delicious title of Wayne Mckay Entertainment & Events Management - want to eat the title up.

At its heart, Wayne says that AfriSnaaks! “is a love letter to the Cape Flats: a place where humour is survival, storytelling is currency, and every family gathering is a live comedy show waiting to happen.”

He adds: “Comedy grows as you grow. The country changes, we change, and the material evolves with it. This run at the Baxter feels like the right time to present the show in its strongest form yet.
