Exciting!

Something Rotten! The Tony nominated musical comedy will be on Artscape in the Arena, July 10-18.

Bravo to Waterfront Theatre School for getting the rights to this musical which sounds abs hilarious.

We need that - to laugh and be entertained.

Kurt Schoonraad is touring with his hit show, Funny Side Up. And the tour is: Funny Side Up - On the Road.

He is on for one night only at Cafe Roux, on June 12 and then on at the Baxter, June 22-27.

Last week, it was announced that Zubayr Charles was nominated for Best New Director for his play, 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐫𝐚'𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐨 at Cape Town Theatre Awards.

Anzio September was nominated as Best Actor. The nominations have delighted and surprised Zubayr. His work grapples with uncomfortable issues and realities.

Uncomfortable realities are core to Zubayr's play, 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐛𝐫𝐚'𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐬𝐲𝐜𝐡𝐨. The play will have its first “official” run in the Artscape Arena, from June 2-6, 2026. It has been staged on the festival circuit but this is its first official season.

The one-hander stars Anzio, who plays five characters. Zubayr who also directs, hopes that people leave the theatre “with a little more peace and compassion”.

Amen to that.

𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗯𝘆 𝗡𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗣𝗮𝘆𝗻𝗲 - 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲

“It’s fiercely a contemporary play, in these times of AI, multiverse, and so many approaches to intimate relationships,” muses Jay Pather about Constellations, which he is directing for How Now Brown Cow for its 2026 Winter Season, in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

It is a relationship story with an intriguing non-linear narrative. Mwenya Kabwe plays Marianne, a quantum physicist, deep diving into string theory and the multiverse. Mark Elderkin plays Roland, a beekeeper. From their first meeting at a BBQ (or did that actually happen?), the audience becomes immersed in a multiverse of realities/possibilities. While the text and setting is as Payne envisaged it, in this production, South Africa 2026, it is layered with an African Cosmology .

Excited to see this new production, directed by Darryl J Spijkers with musical direction by Alistair Cockburn, with a cast of more than 60 performers, dancers and live accompaniment from the orchestra pit by the newly formed Cape Town Sinfonietta - a 26-piece orchestra.

"At a time when large live orchestras are increasingly rare in musical theatre productions, audiences will have the opportunity to experience Gilbert and Sullivan’s sparkling score performed in full."

Please, don’t call me moffie, written and directed by Zubayr Charles, premiered in Cape Town at Artscape ATKV Rep Theatre as part of the 2025 Suidoosterfees.

Exciting news is that the acclaimed play, starring Anzio September will be on at Artscape in its Arena, from June 2-6, 2026 (seven performances).

BY the way last week, it was announced that another play by Zubayr, this bra's a psycho has been nominated for two Cape Town Theatre Awards (formerly The Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards), for Best New Director (Zubayr) and Best Supporting Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Play (Anzio). Bravo to the team.

Hopefully, this bra's a psycho will return soon but in the meanwhile, it is a wonderful opportunity to see Please, don’t call me moffie -
When I reviewed the play in May 2025, I wrote that it is a “brave and important play”. Check it out.

The Curious Case of Katherine Sinclair, a juke box musical is premiering in Cape Town, from July 1-5, 2026 (seven performances) at the Star Theatre, The Homecoming Centre (ex Fugard).

New script - new musical - conceived and written by Stephan Fourie and Megan Armstrong-Davies.

They are also performing, along with Amy Reed and Daniel von Hoesslin.

And they are producing.
