Hey FB Family:-)

Yet again I've invited myself to someone's music!!

While I've built a career on Jazz and Pop music, my roots have always laid with the church. The irony of me being the least boastful Christian you'll meet is not wasted on me (LOLZ!!!)
Regardless I've always had a love for our South African brands of Gospel music...whether it be Pinkster (Pentecostal), Baptist, NAC, etc. I'm a particular fan of artists like Kevin Booysen and groups like 'Dumisani' who have always pushed for indigenous music genres to fuse with our flavour of Gospel music which is like none other on earth:-)

One of my favourite bassists and people is Chadleigh Gowar who just makes this music come to life and inspires so many of us.
Here's my quick ONE TAKE of a play through of a song that hits home for me as it prays for rain in areas that don't usually enjoy as much of it as we do in Cape Town.

I recorded my Markbass MBGV Gloxy bass directly into my Little Marcus 58R head completely flat and slightly compressed the bottom end. HUGE love to MarkBass South Africa for getting these affordable (in spite of their amazing quality) guitars into the South African market where some brands are just too expensive for even professionals to own them. The Gloxy range of basses hits FAR above their weight and is worth every cent:-)

Hey FB Family:-)

Today I received my first of several Markbass bass guitars I plan to acquire over the next year. HUGE love to MarkBass South Africa for getting this amazing guitar to me.

I've just uploaded a VERY honest review of this guitar...

This bass is a Fender-killer and then some!! Recorded purely with my phone's audio to keep it as untouched as possible...obviously the audio isn't studio-grade but I've purposefully done gear reviews like this now. If your gear sounds good on a terrible sound source, imagine how magical it will be once it's in your hands?!!

While I am endorsed by Markbass, I have always maintained complete honesty in my reviews which is risky but a big reason for why my students and the many professionals I come into contact with always trust the information they get from me:-) I call it like I see it and never hype gear I wouldn't use myself.

Yet again I've invited myself to someone's music!!

I absolutely fell in love with the vibe and tone of this video recorded by Natasha Adams & Avron J Adams. I've been and admirer of both of them as musicians and people on the Cape Town gospel circuit for decades and always hoped to one day be good enough to perform with them...this is the closest I could get (LOLZ)!!!

Recorded my bass with an Audio-Technica AT2020 and I'm always pleasantly surprised by how perfectly it captures my tone! I'm sure there are more expensive microphones and I do own an amazing DPA440 for live performances but in studio the AT2020 just 'gets me'! I also haven't played upright since June so am getting back into my daily practicing routines...soon:-)

Hey FB Family:-)

Yet again I've invited myself to someone's music!!

I absolutely fell in love with the vibe and tone of this reel by Ciccio Merolla and thought I'd take a stab at doing something a bit outside of my usual music genres. I've been a scholar of Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music for decades but don't always have an outlet to see if what I know is right and/or feels good. I just loved the feel, fire and funkiness of the percussion and drumming so just added some triangle and brass for the vibes...sometimes production doesn't need to be a lot as long as it feels good:-)

Recorded my MIM Fender 1958 P-bass straight into my amazing Markbass (MarkBass South Africa) Little Marcus 58R completely FLAT. Literally every guitar I plug into this amp sounds so much fuller/richer but with a little 'bite'. Added slight multi-band compression for the bottoms but otherwise left it as it is.

As a musician in South Africa, regardless of genre, race, creed, etc. please go learn about the music and the people of Shifty Records who have been instrumental in changing the face and sound of South African music before, during and after Apartheid and well into the future!

It's always such an honour to get to record with some of the Lord's favourite folks and champions! Huge love and thanks to Andrew Baird for having me play on the legendary Janet Manyowa's music every so often:-)

I wish I knew what the lyrics mean but it is easy to feel God throughout the music these amazing people make...Tariro definitely feels like Hope:-)
