But over time, they've widened our scope of celebrations. And now each week alongside those still wonderful big wins, they also share about how we asked for help, how they took space when big emotions were bubbling up, how they set a boundary when theh needed and how they advocated for themselves and their needs. Pretty great things worth celebrating both for us and our kids.

This is a brilliant reminder. Parents are a child’s first teachers.

There are some lessons we need to explicitly teach rather than waiting for them to just watch and figure it out for themselves.

With social and emotional learning it’s good to explain what you’re doing and why. For example, “I’m feeling a bit stressed after work, but I know that by slowing down, belly breathing and having a chat and a laugh with you, I’ll feel better. My stress will pass through me.”

Emotion coaching...

Research shows that emotion coached children are more emotionally stable, more resilient, have fewer behavior problems, better relationships with their parents, and are more self aware.

Parents and educators trained in emotion coaching report feeling able to communicate more effectively with children during difficult situations and found these situations to be less stressful.

Emotion coaching is one component of EFFT, Emotion Focused Family Therapy, and it's helped tremendously with my own children so I can speak from first hand experience.

The way we speak about children matters 🌈

What did you hear about yourself growing up?

✨She’s so dramatic.
✨He never finishes anything.
✨They’re such a wuss.

How we talk about our children matters. It shapes the way they see themselves. That doesn't mean that we can't talk about the challenges--because there ARE challenges--but I wonder what it would look like if we did that without using language that is harmful or disrespectful to children.

What would it look like to seek support, and talk about the hard, without making it a child's responsibility to change? To frame it in a way that recognizes that our feelings are OUR responsibility.
What challenges are you facing right now? Let's shift the language and support each other while respecting our kiddos.
