Mash.T Design Studio MashT Design Studio translates lineages of craft and texture into statement lighting and furniture. Lineages of craft, shaped by imagination.

Our work blends indigenous craftsmanship with modern technology, sparking imagination by reimagining the familiar to create a contemporary design aesthetic Founded in 2016, Mash.T Design Studio translates lineages of craft and texture into statement lighting and furniture. Our work blends indigenous craftsmanship with modern technology, sparking imagination by reimagining the familiar to create a contemporary design aesthetic. In recent years, Mash.T became the first South African designer-maker to have two of its pieces, the Tutu Pendant and Mjojo Cabinet, acquired as part of the permanent collection at Paris’ Musée des Arts Décoratifs at the Louvre.

Before a Mash.T piece leaves our workshop, there’s plenty you don’t get to see.

The testing, the adjustments, the conversations around a piece. Knowing when something needs another try, and taking the time to make sure it’s right.

Here’s a glimpse of the people and work behind your order.

Telephone wire (telewire) was made to connect us. In the hands of a weaver, it takes on another life.

Colour becomes pattern, and a familiar material becomes something unexpected, one line at a time.

Our first Material Highlight looks at telephone wire and the people who reveal its possibilities. Among them are Bab’ Alfred’s children, who continue the weaving practice he passed on.

Swipe through for a closer look at the material, the craft and what it becomes at Mash.T.

If it isn’t immediately obvious why we called it Ronta, the clue is in its silhouette.

The Ronta Pendant takes its form from the familiar shape of a rondavel, interpreted through vibrant colour, pattern and telephone wire woven by hand.

Shown here alongside the Vase Pendant, Ronta can hold its own as a singular feature or create an entirely different rhythm when repeated across a space.

Earlier this month, Thabisa Mjo returned to Paris to join a Maison&Objet panel on South Africa’s rising generation of designers.

As a juror, she had looked for designers with an original point of view. On stage, she also spoke about the makers behind Mash.T’s work and how their knowledge of materials shapes each piece. It was a chance to share our practice while celebrating the many different voices in South African design.

Paris holds another part of our story, too. The Tutu 2.0 Pendant and Mjojo Cabinet are in the permanent collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. Their journey there began with a series of encounters no one could have predicted.

Not the pepper kind. Not the dating-app kind. The workshop kind. 😅

This angle grinder smooths welded joints and prepares our metal pieces for powder coating, a necessary step behind the clean finish of many Mash.T objects.

The workshop knows this sound very well. Recreating it was another story. 😂

Sound on for the team’s interpretations and the real thing at the end. 🔊

A table with its own rhythm.

Woven by Mam’ Beauty Ngxongo, the Mat Table brings warmth, texture and character into a room. Its patterned surface draws you closer, while its sculptural form gives the space a distinctive focal point.

The in-situ images also feature the Bird’s Nest light.

As we close Women’s Month, we’re acknowledging some of the women whose questions, commissions and support quietly expanded what Mash.T is capable of.

Kim Selvidge, Elizabeth Joubert, Megan Hesse, Andrea Kleinloog and Sujata Chitlangia are just a few of the many women who have trusted us with ideas that stretched our thinking about material, form and scale.

To every woman who has trusted us with an idea, opened a door or challenged us to think bigger: thank you.

Axis, in the pages of VISI.

The Trapezium Pendant and Wall Sconce 3.5 are featured in “Stacking Up”—VISI’s Aug/Sep shopping edit exploring stacked, geometric and totemic forms.

It feels like a fitting context for Axis, a collection shaped through repetition, material exploration and the possibilities found in mild steel offcuts.

Swipe through to see the editorial feature and both pieces in situ.

Thank you for including our work in this edit.
