Iran's participation in the 2026 World Cup is uncertain due to the recent US-Israel military strikes that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Iranian Football Federation's president, Mehdi Taj, stated it's "unlikely" they'll participate, citing safety concerns and the ongoing conflict.
Iran had qualified for the tournament, scheduled to take place in the US, Mexico, and Canada, and was drawn into Group G with Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand. If Iran withdraws, potential replacements could be Iraq or the United Arab Emirates.
FIFA is monitoring the situation and prioritizing a safe tournament for all participants. The organization has contingency plans in place, including replacing Iran with the next highest-ranked team from the Asian qualifying process.
