We are currently showing Steven Sack's The artist needs a hat, his solo exhibition on until the 29th of November.
On Saturdays we remain open until 2 pm, it is the perfect day for gallery hopping in Cape Town, start with us, on the corner of Long Church Streets.
Opening tonight at 5 pm Steven Sack's The artist needs a hat, a solo exhibition taking our entire building. It is also First Thursdays in Cape Town. Pop into the city and experience incredible art. The galleries remain open until at least 8 pm. We look forward to welcoming you
Please join us this First Thursday as we present Stevan Sack’s new solo exhibition The Artist Needs A Hat.
How could a thought be an object that made itself? Could the air inside a balloon be the answer as to not only what, but also how? Artist Stevan Sack utilises his interest in play, music, and time to navigate through the constraints of the working artist, and find ways for art to create itself. In reflection, Sack remarks that “I was only capable of short spurts at focusing, condensing, and the beginning of rather rambling thinking. A thought containing an idea, or a possible action would emerge, and be forgotten.”
Come by and experience The Artist Needs A Hat as it explores what is needed to be an artist. The work can be previewed during the day prior to the exhibition opening at 5:00pm. We wait to welcome you all

Nel Gallery is collaborating with Q Studio in Riebeek Kasteel for their Solo Studios Weekend taking place from the 26th to the 28th of August. Our exhibition of landscape work is titled GROUND | VISTA | VESSEL, it previews on Thursday the 25th and you are welcome to join us for a glass of bubbly or when it all starts on Friday. There is a full program of art Walkabouts, film screenings and book launches #Qstudio #solostudiosrk #nelonlong #artfestival #riebeekkasteel
Nel is situated in the centre of the Art, Design, Antiques, African crafts and Fashion hub that is Church Street in Cape Town. Luan Nel is the owner and director of the gallery. He is himself a practicing artist, as well as freelance curator and art writer for various print as well as digital publications. His partner (and spouse) is Neil Pendock, a mathematician but also a wine writer and art lover. Neil and Luan have been actively collecting art for 28 years. The gallery starts as an extension of this love of painting, objects, installation, or even less tangible things like performative work. Luan hopes Nel to be a space that attempts to fill the gaps in the current art landscape of Cape Town. It is a commercial space as much as it is a space for more experimental work, work not always geared for the market. He believes there is room enough for an art space that focuses on the beautiful, the meaningful, the informative and work that sparks the imagination.
Central to Nel is ‘the hang’ in the salon-style. Nel likens it to ‘The Borg’ from the sci-fi series Star Trek in the sense that it forms a type of collective of reflections from different artists using various art practices and showcasing various themes as well as addressing current issues in the art landscape and society. It is constantly changing and developing, in this sense it is a ‘shape-shifter’
