Please join us this First Thursday as we present Stevan Sack’s new solo exhibition The Artist Needs A Hat.

How could a thought be an object that made itself? Could the air inside a balloon be the answer as to not only what, but also how? Artist Stevan Sack utilises his interest in play, music, and time to navigate through the constraints of the working artist, and find ways for art to create itself. In reflection, Sack remarks that “I was only capable of short spurts at focusing, condensing, and the beginning of rather rambling thinking. A thought containing an idea, or a possible action would emerge, and be forgotten.”

Come by and experience The Artist Needs A Hat as it explores what is needed to be an artist. The work can be previewed during the day prior to the exhibition opening at 5:00pm. We wait to welcome you all

Welcome to Nel

Nel is situated in the centre of the Art, Design, Antiques, African crafts and Fashion hub that is Church Street in Cape Town. Luan Nel is the owner and director of the gallery. He is himself a practicing artist, as well as freelance curator and art writer for various print as well as digital publications. His partner (and spouse) is Neil Pendock, a mathematician but also a wine writer and art lover. Neil and Luan have been actively collecting art for 28 years. The gallery starts as an extension of this love of painting, objects, installation, or even less tangible things like performative work. Luan hopes Nel to be a space that attempts to fill the gaps in the current art landscape of Cape Town. It is a commercial space as much as it is a space for more experimental work, work not always geared for the market. He believes there is room enough for an art space that focuses on the beautiful, the meaningful, the informative and work that sparks the imagination.

Central to Nel is ‘the hang’ in the salon-style. Nel likens it to ‘The Borg’ from the sci-fi series Star Trek in the sense that it forms a type of collective of reflections from different artists using various art practices and showcasing various themes as well as addressing current issues in the art landscape and society. It is constantly changing and developing, in this sense it is a ‘shape-shifter’

Everybody is welcome.

Echoes Of My Mind | Artist Walkabout with Luxolo Witvoet

A young artist who first came to prominence in the field of photography, Luxolo Witvoet paints the ordinary people that fill his world. The people whose faces he remembers, people in everyday life, faces of Jazz singers he listens to, images he saw in old family albums, faces that are conjured in his imagination.

By combining the memory of them with the iconic Drum logo, he takes his everyday man and elevates them to the level of celebrity. Paying homage to the community that informed his formative years, and the publication that left an indelible mark on the consciousness of the township community that the artist himself is a part of.

Book Launch - Luan Nel (Malta Bella)

This monograph on the artist Luan Nel, maps a trajectory of nearly 30 years of cultural production.

Growing up as a white, gay South African man during Apartheid, these
formative experiences manifest in very many different ways. The initial
texts in this book are partly biographical and partly autobiographical and
paint a picture of how this q***r artist’s cultural production is indelibly
linked to his foundational experiences. Contributions by Alexandra Dodd,
Wilhelm van Rensburg, Brenton Maart, Lloyd Pollack and Robyn Sassen give a range of insights through the various periods and focal points of Nel’s production, whilst interviews with Ilya Rabinovich, Moshekwa Langa and Keval Harie locate his production within expansive arenas.

Book Launch at Nel Cape Town at 6pm, 24 November.
