🚨 MANHUNT UNDERWAY IN THE VAAL 🚨
A massive law enforcement search is active near Bophelong after a group of heavily armed robbers struck Vaal Mall last night, leading to a high-speed highway pursuit and an intense shootout on the R57 [VWS].
What Happened:
* The Heist: At around 19:25 on Wednesday evening, the armed gang executed an after-hours breach, targeting two retail stores inside Vaal Mall [VWS]. Fortunately, the mall was mostly closed, and no injuries or casualties were reported among shoppers, staff, or security teams [VWS].
* The Chase & Shootout: South African Police Service (SAPS) units spotted the suspects fleeing in a white VW Transporter Combi and initiated a stop [VWS]. The suspects refused and opened heavy fire on the highway, severely damaging a marked police vehicle [VWS]. No officers were physically wounded in the crossfire.
* The Crash & Escape: The intense chase ended abruptly when the suspect driver lost control of the Combi, crashing violently into a roadside sign [VWS]. The suspects immediately abandoned the disabled van and escaped on foot into the dark, dense nearby veld.
Current Status:
Forensic teams (LCRC) have thoroughly processed the abandoned vehicle for fingerprints and DNA. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has also been notified due to the police discharging service weapons during the gunfight.
As of tonight, no arrests have been made and the suspects are considered armed and dangerous.
