“We are not just a body. We are also a mind… We are a soul.”

Maria Ascenção organised the 2026 Integrative Mental Health Symposium and chairs the Health Products Association of South Africa (HPASA). She told Joburg Times what integrative mental health means to her.

It doesn’t replace your doctor. It’s about practitioners who also bring nutrition, herbal medicine and other approaches into their work, so that they treat the whole person rather than only the acute condition.

Her advice is simple: eat your veggies, drink good water, go easy on sugar and processed food, and keep balance and moderation in all things.

AI in healthcare: who should be in charge?

We caught up with Bonolo Teki at the 4th National Pharmacy Conference in Durban. She chaired the session on AI and digital healthcare, and her answer to that question was clear: people lead, and technology supports them.

On her panel:
🔹 Dr Yaseen Khan (EMGuidance) on how a clinical app used by more than 140,000 healthcare professionals is keeping pace with AI
🔹 Dr Prinesh Reddy (MSD South Africa) on whether South Africa’s infrastructure and laws are ready for what is coming
🔹 Vishala Gokool-Sewram (Netcare Limited) on CareOn, which brings the full patient record to the pharmacy counter so pharmacists can care for the whole patient as well as fill the script

Paper, then digital, then AI. South African pharmacy is already working through those steps.

Bronze circuit boards, gold-leaf roots and a showroom full of Rolls-Royces.

We were at the opening of Mirrored Futures at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Johannesburg in Melrose Arch, where sculptor Cassian Robbertze explained his work to us.

His bronze figures carry circuit boards “rendered in metal forever.” He sees them as artefacts we might leave behind for future generations. He’s interested in the gap between who we are online and who we are in person, and in what that gap says about what we value.

Spanish artist Paula Anta’s photographs of root systems work as a counterpoint. Her pieces show the order hidden in nature, while Cassian’s show what happens when we don’t think about consequences. Dr Ashraf Jamal curated the show for Artyli Gallery.

Sandton Drive had a different kind of traffic on Sunday. 22 000 of you came out to watch 57 homemade carts take on the Red Bull Box Cart Race, the first one in Joburg since 2018.

Your champions are Joburg’s own Livingroom Referees 🇿🇦. They brought “Nkalakatha” to the start line, wore Bok jerseys with green-and-gold face paint, and drove a cart built to survive anything.

“We always find a way to excel, even though we don’t have as much as everyone else does.”

We caught up with Proteas fast bowler and World Test Champion Kagiso Rabada at The Zone, Rosebank, for What We Know. It’s Red Bull’s four-part documentary series asking what makes South Africans world-class.

KG has been a Red Bull athlete since 2017. He says the series shows athletes who overcome barriers and take on the world at the same time.

“We come from such a complex country, always looking for equality and for diversity to come together,” he told us. “This series is many words of inspiration that people can relate to.”

South Africans are winning everywhere, and Red Bull wants the world to know why.

On the 17th September 2026, at The Zone in Rosebank, we joined the celebration of What We Know. It's a four-part documentary series in which Eugene Khoza travels across the country to find out what makes South Africans world-class.

We caught up with hockey star Thati Zulu, who features in Episode 2. She's an Olympian and South Africa's only female Red Bull athlete. She spent a year letting the cameras into her life, and she says it was emotional.

"A lot of people see the success, but they don't know the journey," she said. "Hockey isn't a professional sport in South Africa, so it has its challenges. I hope people see what it really takes."

Her biggest hope is that a young person who looks like her watches and believes they can do it too.
