OPERATION BASADI: TWO ARRESTED IN ERMELO FOR SUSPECTED COUNTERFEIT GOODS

Ermelo, Mpumalanga – 8 August 2026

Two suspects have been arrested in Ermelo following a police operation targeting suspected counterfeit goods.

According to the SAPS Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner’s Office, the arrests took place on Thursday, 6 August 2026, when members of Ermelo SAPS conducted a stop-and-search operation on a white Toyota Combi towing a white trailer, both with KwaZulu-Natal registration plates.

Police discovered several plastic-wrapped parcels inside the vehicle and trailer. After inspecting the parcels, officers allegedly found large quantities of footwear suspected to be counterfeit.

The suspects, Sandile Mthembu (34) and Sakhile Thembe (36), were arrested and the vehicle, trailer and suspected counterfeit goods were seized.

The two appeared before the Ermelo Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 7 August 2026, and were each granted R1,000 bail. They are expected back in court on 7 September 2026.

Investigations are continuing, including verification of the authenticity and value of the seized goods.

SAPS says it remains committed to fighting the trade in counterfeit goods, which can negatively affect legitimate businesses, consumers and the economy.

FOREIGN NATIONAL ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED DRUG DEALING IN EVANDER

MPUMALANGA — 08 August 2026

A 31-year-old foreign national has been arrested in Evander, Mpumalanga, for allegedly dealing in drugs following an intelligence-driven operation conducted by the Hawks on Friday, 7 August 2026.

According to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), members of the Secunda Serious Organised Crime Investigation, together with the Secunda K9 Unit, SIPRU and Crime Intelligence, carried out the operation after receiving information about suspected drug dealing at a house in Cordoba Street, Evander.

The operation took place at approximately 06:00 on Friday. During a search of the premises, officers allegedly found a black plastic bag containing suspected drugs.

The Hawks said the seized items included:

🔹 Approximately 31 grams of suspected crystal methamphetamine
🔹 Approximately 46 grams of suspected he**in
🔹 R1 850 in cash
🔹 Three cellphones

The suspected drugs are estimated to have a street value of approximately R14 650, while the total value of the seized exhibits is estimated at around R20 000.

The suspect was arrested and detained at Evander Police Station.

The Hawks said the suspect is expected to appear before the Evander Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 11 August 2026, facing a charge of dealing in drugs.

The Provincial Head of the Hawks in Mpumalanga, Major General Nico Ge**er, welcomed the operation and commended the law-enforcement teams involved.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: The suspect is facing an allegation and remains innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.
