People always think that oil paint is the most difficult medium but it's really not! The colours are rich, the texture is creamy and it dries slowly so you have time to move it around and play a little! If you've been frustrated by watercolours unforgiving transparency or acrylics speedy drying - oil paint it for you!

Whether you're a complete beginner or just new to oils, this workshop will teach you in a few hours what I've spent years learning the hard way!

Only 2 days until my oil painting day John Park
In Chichester! Booking through my website (link in Bio) or comment below and I'll send you details.

This morning I taught my Level 2 online drawing class to kids all over the world. These students have been drawing with me for a year or two, most having joined because their parents noticed they had stopped drawing and/or become self-conscious about their ability.

We start slowly in Level 1, copying from my already simplified drawings. Step by step. A different drawing every week. Exactly the same format. Outline, shading, freestyle time (to get creative and make the picture their own), share if they want to. It works.

Then they move to Level 2. We draw from photos and sometimes objects I put under my second camera. I draw at the same time but they draw pretty independently, going at their own pace. Do their own thing. Today we drew my tatty converse shoe. I secretly thought it might be a bit challenging for them. They requested the viewpoint (a very difficult angle!😬)

There was no room to show my drawing alongside the shoe so we just all drew and chatted for 40 minutes or so. The results blew me away. These kids have GOT it. And they dived right in with no fear.

Could you do the same? If not get in touch and let's get you started!

If you want a straightforward process to follow to complete a detailed drawing, this is it!

1. Light outline - map it out. Keep it light and make changes as needed.

2. Light shading - block out where the darker areas are, leave the lights. No need to go super hard - just figure out shapes of shadows.

3. Darker shading - go over the darkest areas of the shadows with another layer. (Not pressing harder just another layer!) Use a darker pencil if you need to.

4. Final Detail - add in those darkest darks to boost the contrast and make your drawing pop. Consider edges - keep some soft and fuzzy, others crisp and sharper.

Well - never did I think that a painting of mine would be shown on BBC news! 😁 How funny!

I'm delighted to have had 2 pieces selected for the current Open 26 exhibition at Worthing Museum. The newly reopened museum is looking great and has an amazing collection of historical costumes as well as fine art. Well worth a visit if you're around!
