Today we celebrate International Cat Day (although one day is definitely not enough to do justice to the glory of a furry creature with such a huge ego).

Cats are exceptionally wonderful creatures (Ivar made me write that), but for some inexplicable reason, they are also a huge challenge in taxidermy. Preparing these furry bastards is not only, at least for me, accompanied by an enormous emotional burden (what a beautiful euphemism for “I cry like a child over every dead kitty”), but is also quite a technical challenge.

There are no ready-made forms for taxidermy cats (and that’s a good thing, because we all know how much those little faces differ from one another), and each one requires a custom silicone cast, followed by carefully recreating the muscles (as well as that silly little expression that used to melt their owner’s heart).

So love your cat as much as you possibly can (Ivar is tugging at my arm and saying, “Add that love is expressed through treats!”) while that little heart is still beating for you. 😉

In the photo: Goethe, or rather, his posthumous monument, who was my husband’s beloved cat. Goethe was a sweet little bastard who made everyone fall in love with him and then selfishly died a few years ago.

Well, kitty, we forgive you and we miss you. ❤

The train gently rocked my tired body as I stared blankly at the world rushing past outside the window. I avoid looking at people ever since I started seeing... and I still don't know how to explain it. But then she took the seat beside me, an old woman in a scratchy pink sweater.

“Should I wake you up when we reach your stop, sweetheart?” She smelled of cats, coffee and mothballs. “I can see your eyes are getting heavy. You young people work too much these days.”

I smiled gratefully and immediately regretted looking in her direction. From the back of her head down to her lower back, stretching through the old woman’s plump body, there was a hole, a literal tear in her flesh. Inside, pink flesh was pulsing. Between the veins, there were eyes. Dozens of eyes. All of them staring at her with expectation, piercing through every thought, every movement, every word. Each one expected something different:

That she would lose weight.
That she would take care of her grandchildren.
That she would apologize for words spoken years ago without realizing they caused harm.
That she would start dressing better.
That she would talk less.
That she would talk more.
That she would entertain the people around her.
That she would care for the comfort of others.

Yes. People pleaser. They fill their emptiness with the expectations of others. I had seen it so many times before.

The old woman adjusted her sweater and smiled at me even wider.

And suddenly all the eyes turned towards me.

Sometimes you have to create something just to see what an idea looks like in reality. Not to make it pretty, and not to please anyone else. That is how this quirky little creature came to be. I made his flesh out of polymer clay.

Help.
Sometimes I have to swallow my pride and admit that I need help.

On average, my posts are seen by 300 people- mostly "top fans" (as Facebook calls them). Of course, I’m incredibly grateful for every comment you leave, but I’m seriously worried about how few people actually see my art. I create for the joy of creation (or out of a burning need to create - depending on how you look at it), but when so few people see it, it’s hard to earn enough to cover the cost of living and art supplies...
I’ve tried posting regularly, taking more interesting photos, making videos, and posting in niche groups (though my posts keep getting rejected-possibly by the groups' AI assistants). I just don't know what to change.

If you have any ideas at all, please let me know. Even if you think the idea is silly or obvious, please share it.

An awesome Ivar for attention ;)
