BACULITE - Baculites are heteromorph ammonites - Late Cretaceous marine cephalopods that evolved unconventional straight shells rather than the familiar tight spiral. Baculites lived in chambered shells divided by internal walls called septa. Where the septa met the outer shell, intricate suture lines are seen.
This fossil was recovered from the Bearpaw Shale in Alberta. During the late Cretaceous (70 to 81 million years ago) the Western Interior Bearpaw Sea split North America into two landmasses. This warm, shallow sea supported abundant marine life and its sediment chemistry allowed for the fine preservation of shell detail and occasionally preserved gem quality, iridescent nacre known as Ammolite.
