It was great to meet legendary composer @antonioadolfooficial in his music school in Leblon, Rio de Janeiro. As a pioneer he was the first artist to self release his own record back in 1977. His song “Aonde Voce Vai“ is one of my favorite brazilian songs. 🙏 Muito Obrigado!

It has power, is unpredictable, bringing together familiar things before disbanding them again. It reshuffles the deck: The composition “Stay on It”, written by Julius Eastman (1940–1990) in 1973, turns the coordinates of avant-garde music on its head. It is minimal, but unashamedly groovy; it is open to improvisation, grants performers all the freedom they could need, but it isn’t jazz and never slips into the non-committal. Once the musicians have gotten used to the discipline, have adopted the groove that Eastman demands of them, a vast field of new connections opens up to them, leading to sublime sonic unions.

10 YEARS OF WEEK-END FEST
10/10 – 2021. Design by @edruschaofficial
While shows were happening over the summer it was still a gamble if things will stay the same for autumn. Especially with our line up that could’t be more international. With artists such as Suzanne Ciani (USA), Gilberto Gil (Brazil), Caterina Barbieri (Itsly), Anadol (Turkey), Flohio (UK) and Mulatu Astatke (Etiopia). The latter didn’t make it in the first place (not though because of Corona related restrictions!) but with the postponed date in November he got us even a second Week-End Fest this year. Highlight: 8 musicians from Cologne, Berlin, Brussels and Amsterdam did perform the late minimal music composer Julius Eastman’s “Stay On It” for the festival’s opening. Memorable!

Shortly after our 2019 edition the world stood still. The global Covid-19 pandemic and the tragic events associated with it did tie our hands. Over the summer we tried ways to make things possible again in the fall season. This line up above was confirmed and planned to be announced 14 days before the event. It was intended as a joint event with Cologne “Night of Surprise“. Two days before the announcement, a national lockdown put an end to these plans. In spring 2021 we tried again to get confirmation for Lee 'Scratch' Perry, but his sudden death in late August broke all of our dreams. What happened if…

10 YEARS OF WEEK-END FEST
9 of 10 – 2019. Design by @eganfrantz
Pulled out of the hat only 6 weeks before the event, 2019’s edition felt like a return to strength. After several invitations we finally got the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra, led by the back then 95 ear old maestro Marshall Allen to return to Cologne for the first time in over three decades. Another highlight: Brazil´s Arthur Verocai who performed his 1972 self titled psych-Tropicalia-masterpiece for the first time ever in Germany backed by an orchestra of Cologne based musicians. Exciting sounds by female newcomers Tirzah and Lafawndah from London, Eiko Ishibashi from Japan and a fantastic performance by improv meister Fred Frith. Jamaica´s Scientist performed his iconic „Scientist Rids The World Of The Evil Curse Of The Vampires“ with a UK band.

Early in 2018 we tragically lost our dear friend and Week-End Fest co-founder Jörg Waschat. As the following months were heavy and intense it felt inappropriate to continue. So we decided to call it off internally. A month before we thought it would be nice to do something small and musically more far out and dedicate the evening to our late friend. The result was a one night only event named „A short Week-End is better than no Week-End at all“. And it felt like the right thing to do.

After a personal challenging year this edition came together like a miracle and it felt like a relief. We got Pascal Comelade who we asked for many years to play his first show outside of France in over 20 years. Shintaro Sakamoto played his first ever live show as a solo artist and as a grande finale Devendra Banhart teamed up with our longtime friend Jherek Bischoff backed by Cologne’s Rundfunk Tanzorchester Ehrenfeld. Unforgettable.

When our friend Jörg left Week-End Fest after five years, Theresa, who was was part of the team since 2013 became one of the main curators. Thanks to her we got to see the great Slapp Happy to reunite with Faust after 44 years and the Julie Ruin, the new band of Bikini Kill’s Kathleen Hanna and Kathi Wilcox. Lambchop’s Kurt Wagner performing his new album exclusively with 5 Cologne based electronic musicians. Ambitious and challenging as always.

Brighter than ever and the most artists on three nights to this day, the 2014 edition of Week-End Fest was a blast and we have fond memories of it.

10 YEARS OF WEEK-END FEST
3/10 - 2013, Design by Lawrence Weiner. That year we fulfilled a lot of wishes from our personal wishlist. Jörg choose The Pastels, Grant Hart and Yuck, Jan choose The Fall, Young Marble Giants and Mirel Wagner. We both were looking out for the great Robert Forster who we asked to perform new arrangements by Jherek Bischoff with a string quartet. The rest is history. Also that year we found the venue that we’re still at since then.

Lawrence Weiner 1942–2021.
I stopped writing obituaries since there have been quiet a lot passings of people who are dear to me in recent years but I have a beautiful memory meeting Lawrence i wanted to share. In September 2013 I was the last time in New York and through my friend Jessica Hutchins I got to visit Lawrence in his studio in Manhattan. It was the afternoon of September 28. His assistent was just about to finish work and when she left I was alone with Lawrence. He said "We should have a Whiskey", so we had one. For an hour or so we talked and I kindly asked him if he would be interested in designing our poster for our Week-End Fest that year. I felt he was perfect for it. He said that he cannot promise it to me but that he would do his best to make it work. And he did. I was overwhelmed by his generosity and kindness. He was a great story teller and i thank him for what he did for us. Before I left he handed me a small book that he just finished and I took a photograph back then of the centerfold pages. This is what it says and your words give me the confidence to believe in the beauty of eternity.
SOMETHING ANYTHING EVERYTHING CAN BE BEAUTIFUL SOMEPLACE.

WICHTIG: Bei unserem Nachholkonzert mit Mulatu Astatke am kommenden Sonntag 28. November 2021 in der Stadthalle Köln-Mülheim gilt für den Einlass die 2G+ Regelung (laut NRW-Schutzverordnung) das heißt, dass über den Impf- bzw. Week-End Mixtape #16 Sun Ra Arkestra The work of Herman Poole Blount, better known as Sun Ra, and his Arkestra encompasses an entire solar system of challenging and outstanding music. Even the most dedicated of jazz fans can quickly become “lost in space” in this huge body of work. So what could be better than an experienced space traveler, or two, to take you on a trip to the most beautiful spots in Ra’s “Omniverse”? Saxophonists Marshall Allen and Knoel Scott have put together five of their favorite compositions by their bandleader, who has himself been traveling other worlds since 1993, for the Week-End Mixtape series. While Arkestra leader Allen mainly focuses on the period in the late 1970s when Sun Ra was probably closer than ever to “spiritual jazz”, Scott goes back to the 1950s when Ra’s music was still clearly anchored in the big-band and rhythm-and-blues tradition. “My selections also reflect my love of John Gilmore as a musician and a mentor. Notwithstanding that my introduction over the last twenty years has come from Marshall Allen. ‘Jazz in Silhouette’ was my introduction to the music of Sun Ra and it will always be my favorite Sun Ra album.” (Knoel Scott, Sun Ra Arkestra, April 2020) As a bonus track, Scott has chosen a song that seems particularly fitting in the current crisis. https://www.mixcloud.com/weekendfest/16-the-sun-ra-arkestra-week-end-mixtape/

Dear Week-End Fest,
It is with a heavy heart that I have to cancel my show in Cologne on 9th October 2021.
Due to reasons outside my control, I am unable to travel as planned from Addis Ababa.
This was our first show back in nearly two years, we were so looking forward to being back on-stage.
My team is working hard on bringing us back to Cologne in the near future.
