A little passion project! I have wanted to try silversmithing for a while and have dabbled here and there in the past. Last year, I managed to visit Karen Griffiths from Living Silver Designs at her home studio to discuss some of her work and create something special of my own! I created a sterling silver overlay mountain ring, with textured line details and curved 'C' shapes using metal stamps. The 'C' I chose as it is the first letter of my sons name. To finish the piece, I chose to add 'liver of sulphur' to add an iridescent colour oxide to emphasise the textured elements. A great 1:1 workshop run by the very talented Karen Griffiths! I would love to continue to create some pieces using a combination of metal and ceramics. Watch this space!

Happy Chinese New Year! It is the year of the Fire Horse 🐎 so I have been drawing some horses and my 2 year old son has been colouring and practicing his cutting. Lets encourage creativity for all ages!

WIP of a Winter scene ceramic tile. I sketch my design first and then scratch into the surface using the Sgraffito surface decoration method. It has layered underglazes which will be become richer in colour once fired to stoneware.

Last month’s Inlay (Mishima) and Sgraffito Workshop at .pottery was a real highlight. An eclectic and impressive body of work emerged, and it was a joy to teach such a creative group. There is a real variety of workshops taught at Loam - something for everyone and such a bright and welcoming space!

I managed to visit and watch two demonstrations by at their beautiful and bright studio in Courtenay and some wonderful painters Corina Menz and Julie Sabey at the Albion Studio doing some speed painting - which is painting under strict time restraints. Both were warm and welcoming spaces filled with creativity! They also mentioned the monthly 'Crit Club' for painters to come together discussing their work and learning new skills. All thanks to Central Island Arts Guide/Tour and Comox Valley Arts for organising a great studio tour event. What a creative community we live in here in Comox Valley!

I wanted to highlight two local studios I managed to visit whilst on the Studio Tour event recently. .studio and Torquay studio. I met with and to discuss their work and beautiful working studio - Artwrx is a shared studio space with 7 individual artists with very unique styles. The Square Foot public art show was also running with 60+ artworks on display. A wonderful creative space!

I also went to Torquay Studio in Comox where I met Channing Holland, Terri Stelfox, Diane Naugler and Maggie Norman who displayed a wide variety of printed and original works, and I watched a short demonstration on printmaking techniques.

I managed to visit a number of art studios and gallery spaces this weekend during the wonderful Studio Tour event run by & . I would have loved to visit more, but these were my main highlights! I will be posting individual studio shots too as each one has an amazing creative presence in the community of the Comox Valley.
