I would definitely call this match a fluke.
I am not underestimating Australia in any way. On the contrary, they played brilliantly and deserved the win.
But before the World Cup started, most analysts considered Turkey to be one of the dark horses. That team lost 2-0 to Australia in the first match of the World Cup—which is really surprising.
A lot was expected from a team that has star footballers like Güler Yildiz, Vadalu, Akhtaroğlu, Yılmaz. But football is such a game of uncertainty—a strong team on paper cannot always bring results in their favor on the field. And Australia proved that in this match.
One of the great strengths of Australia's defense is their physical presence and height. That defensive discipline was one of the reasons behind their 2-0 victory against a technical team like Turkey.
For me, Australia's most formidable weapon is their set-piece defense. It's always difficult to score against them from corners or free kicks.
Some great saves from the goalkeeper at crucial times. I think Turkey's biggest problem was - they attacked a lot, but couldn't get into the box and create clear chances. And Australia punished them on the counter when they had the chance.
Now Turkey's next match has become a "must-win" match. Another stumble will complicate the equation of getting to the knockouts.
