I get the question now and then about how I prepare and prime my alters and I figured I can share the general method I use. There are of course special cases where I do something else, like hand paint the basecoat for some reason.
But, here goes.
Bluetack for covering text and Mana, etc. If the text box will be left as it is, I cover it with a custom cut paper that fits the box, Bluetack along the edges. I have found it's easiest for me to use that than tape as I've many times had more work to do after tape than bluetac.
When all the essentials are covered I spray with Games Workshops Chaos Black spray, or their white if needed. I come from the miniature world and I have tried many other brands, and I think they got the best spray in the game for what I need. That I have found.
Spray where you got ventilation or alot of space, or basement, or outside. Don't die, okay? I want you alive and we'll and painting cool stuff!
Thin quick layers. No holding and spraying as you will add too much. Practice on some random cards or such. And also make sure to have distance from the card and the underlay, otherwise the paint will bounce up against the surface your spraying against and end up on the backside of the card. Or if you are spraying with the card against the surface.. Well, it's gonna get sticky.
There will be dust, and things in the paint sometimes and this you remove with a sharp hobby knife, scalpel or such by slicing it away gently down to surface level. This also applies to when you paint the design and want that flat finish.
Dust is omnipresent, can't help that, only work around it.
Then when the spray is dry you can remove all the bluetac and such and start using the knife again to flatten down any irregularities. After this is done I fill in with black paint around the text and boxes, etc etc and, BAM!! You can start painting.
I hope this helps a little.
There is also another trick of you don't want to spray over with black because you want to paint over the original art, and that is to use clear varnish (again, Games Workshop Munitorium Varnish, yes that is the name hah) to make it easy to paint on the surface.
My friends, my peeps and wonders of the world, have fun and keep creating!
Have an awesome summer and make someone happy today. If noone else, make yourself happy. ❤️🌞
