Cave art has always fascinated me. I had a lot of fun creating these two "Homage" paintings to Lascaux cave, one of the amazing caves found in France and Spain where this ancient art (35,000-14,000 years old, depending on the specific cave) can be found. My current reading list has been recent books about the latest scientific discoveries concerning these caves and their art. These two watercolor and oil pastel paintings on Canson Mi Tientes board are available.

I do pet portraits, but this has to be one of the more interesting animals I have done. "Star", is a 9" x 12" watercolor on Arches 140 lb. Cold Press paper portrait of a Blue Orpington hen. So much fun to paint :) Correction: Star is a Blue Australorp hen, not an orpington. Apologies, Star.

This favorite from the past reminds me that one of the nice things about living in Kerrville is being able to go to the Guadalupe River to photograph and paint. "Transformation" is another painting from earlier this year. I didn't like the way this one was going, so I threw some water and yellow paint on it and let the colors run. I like the result much better. 18 x 24, watercolor on 300 lb Fabriano cold press. Available.

I am revisiting and reposting some of my favorite paintings done in 2023. Here is "When It Snowed", 13 x 19, watercolor on 140 lb Arches Cold Press paper. This painting was based on the scenery at the River Road Crossing of the Guadalupe River near Hunt, TX, during Snowmageddon, a few years back. Available.

Damp Paint: I painted the original painting of this scene a couple years ago, and wasn't quite happy with it. This weekend I cut the original 13x19 painting down to 9x12 , and added some paint to most of the areas of the picture. The "boot fence" I used as the model for this painting is along Willow City Loop NE of Fredericksburg, TX. "Spring at the Boot Fence" is 9x12, watercolor on 140 lb Fabriano Rough paper.

WET PAINT: "Sunrise, Willow City Loop", 12'h x 16"w, watercolor on 140 lb Hahnemuhle Rough paper. I am hoping that the recent rains continue, and I get to see another spring like this. Willow City Loop , NE of Fredericksburg, TX is a beautiful drive at any time, but a spring with good wildflower bloom is unforgettable.

I just learned that I have been chosen as a Special General Administrator's Feature Artist of Distinction in Fine Art America's "The ARTIST BUZzz" group for my painting "Fall-Gravel Pit Lakes". My final painting post of the Halloween Season: "Pumpkin Pile" 12x16, watercolor on 140 lb Arches Cold Press paper. I found the models for this painting at Jenske's, one of the fun peach/produce/pumpkin stands along the road between Fredericksburg and Stonewall, TX.

I use small 8x10 paintings as studies for potential future large paintings. This gives me a chance to experiment without using up a lot of time and materials. I am able to sell the better ones at a reasonable price, because they are small. Right now, I am working on a series of studies based on photos I took of Willow City Loop, east of Fredericksburg, TX. Here are the first Willow City Loop studies:

Short break from the October paintings--I am currently doing some 8x10 studies which may become the basis for larger artwork. Working small gives me the freedom to experiment for a low expenditure of time and materials. Here are two 8x10 studies of Mitre Peak, in the Davis Mountains. Because they are small, I can sell the successful studies less expensively..

WET PAINT: "Catching Dinner", 11.5" x 15.5", watercolor on 140 lb Hahnemuhle cold press paper. I came upon some old photos I had shot of Brown Pelicans in Port Aransas, and had completely forgotten about. This is the first I have done using them as reference. This juvenile was having a good day fishing in the intercoastal at Roberts point. (Pelican trivia: Brown pelicans are brown all over until they are sexually mature, at which point the feathers on their neck and head turn white. When they are breeding, the back feathers on their head and neck turn a rich brown).

It rained last night, enough to cause some of the creeks to flow again. Hoping for more this evening. "Guadalupe Morning", 15x19, watercolor on 140 lb Moldau Cold press, was painted several years ago. The stretch of river it depicts, looking east from the G street Bridge in Kerrville, has been bone dry recently. I can't wait to go out and see it with water again.

WET PAINT: "Just a Vase With Sunflowers", 12"w x 16" h, watercolor, graphite, and Neocolor crayon on 140 lb Saunders Rough paper. Neocolor II are water soluble, artist quality, wax based crayons made by the Swiss art materials company Caran d'Ache. When wet, they work much like gouache, I had fun combining these with traditional watercolors and water-soluble graphite.

I am stunned at honors my new painting, "Cimarron-Gravel Pit Lake" has just received. It won FIRST PLACE in the highly competitive online contest "Paintings by Women Painters, September" sponsored by the Women Painters group of Fine Art America. I am totally blown away--I thought , if I was incredibly lucky, the painting might get a few votes. Also, "A Woman's Touch" group administrator Brooks Garten Hauschild chose this painting as her Administrator's Pick of the Week. Amazing good news this morning!

Sold, and on its way to its new owner. The Tarpon Inn is a historic hotel in Port Aransas, TX that has managed to survive many hurricanes and host many notable people, including former US President Franklin D. Roosevelt. This painting was one of a few that I painted on some really nice handmade watercolor paper, called Moldau, from the Czech Republic. Moldau is hand made from cotton and linen fibers. It was so nice to have special paper on which to paint this special building. "Tarpon Inn" is 16x22, watercolor on 140 lb Moldau cold press.

FINAL VERSION: I often paint several versions of a painting before I am somewhat satisfied. This is the THIRD, and LAST(for now) version of this spot on the Gravel Pit lakes in beautiful Cimarron Canyon, New Mexico. "Fall-Cimarron Gravel Pit Lake" is 12 x 16, watercolor on 140 lb Arches Rough paper. The drive through this canyon, on the way to Taos, is unforgettable, especially if you get to see it in the fall.

So here is a larger, somewhat more developed painting of the same scene I posted yesterday in an 8x10 study. The bigger painting is 12x16, watercolor on 140 lb Arches Rough paper. I want to do a third version, but I think I will let my brain rest a bit.

We got two drops of rain last night, so I continue on with my water themed painting posts. This little 8x10 study will hopefully be translated into a larger painting soon. "Cimarron-Gravel Pit Lake Study", 8x10, watercolor on 140 lb Arches Rough.

WET PAINT: "Cimarron Bridge Study", 8 x 10 watercolor on 300 lb Fabriano Rough. I do these little studies to explore ideas, and if they work out, I can sell them more inexpensively than my larger paintings. The inspiration for this one is a little bridge at the Gravel Pit Lakes in Cimarron Canyon, New Mexico. I was lucky enough to go there when there was fall color.
