R.I.P. Barry Mitchell, Former Queen Bassist, Has Died

Very sad news from the Queen family. Barry Mitchell, who played bass with Queen during the band's formative years, has passed away. His death was confirmed by Queen's official archivist Greg Brooks, who remembered Mitchell warmly and highlighted the fascinating stories he shared about those earliest days of the band.

Mitchell became Queen's second bassist in 1970, replacing Mike Grose and joining Freddie Mercury, Brian May and Roger Taylor at a time when the group was still developing its identity, sound and repertoire. During his approximately six months with Queen, Mitchell performed a series of early concerts with the trio and played material that would later become part of the band's history, including songs such as "Liar," "Keep Yourself Alive," "Great King Rat" and "Stone Cold Crazy."

Mitchell left Queen in January 1971, shortly before the arrival of John Deacon completed the legendary lineup that would conquer the world. He may have departed before the records, stadiums and global fame arrived, but Barry Mitchell was there during a fascinating and rarely seen chapter of Queen's story, when Freddie, Brian and Roger were still building the band that would become one of rock's greatest. Rest in peace, Barry.
