"Because lotuses rise from the mud without stains, they are often viewed as a symbol of purity. Since they return to the murky water each evening and open their blooms at the break of day, lotus flowers are also symbols of strength, resilience, and rebirth."

I realized that I'm happiest when I stop keeping up with society's norms & noise of how and what one should do in art. Instead, I'm most in my element when I use art as an avenue to serve.

Serve is quite an incomprehensible word for me for many years. For a long time, I've thought that art is a self-serving practice, I feel joy when I paint, and therefore I only serve myself. Furthermore, creative endeavors are often placed in the “self-actualization” level on Maslow's hierarchy, hence it's like the last thing people need in their lives...

But in recent years, I've come to recognize the importance of serving with art. How do I serve with art? I realized I could facilitate connections using art, even if it's just for a short moment. Connections with self and others through communing around art and creativity.

In this age and time, connection is more important than ever because we are facing more challenges & uncertainties that can be difficult to navigate alone. By connecting, we can find strength, resilience, and hope, and work together to find solutions to challenges. Connection is essential as it helps us to feel fulfilled, supported, and belong.

With that knowing, I've finally come to terms with my approach & view to art. Like I can finally anchor myself confidently in the practice of making art, not needing to compete or feel small if my work doesn't match up to others' expectations. It really doesn't matter anymore whether I take 3 years or 8 minutes to finish a painting. Or, if I'm drawing a black cat or just zen doodling. What matters more to me is: am I serving with art?

Photos of my Open Studio event on 17-18Dec, 2022! The air was so festive & cheerful during my Open Studio days🥰. You guys are truly awesome for turning up at my little event even though it's a last minute invitation amidst this busy month and I felt so loved!!

For those who didn't manage to make it to visit, here are some highlights of what we did in the Open Studio:
✨I showed my painting evolution through the years since 2009 where I first started to pickup the brushes again
✨I divided the rooms into sections of my style transformation (from doodling to black cat to intuitive pieces)
✨I had my merchandise and mini canvases for sale downstairs
✨I did demos of how I paint quick 8minutes abstract work with a black cat at the standing table downstairs
✨Gladys Cheng serenaded everyone with her sweet songs and dances on Day1 then everyone joined in the open mic, sang, dance together
✨Ainey letting everyone taste her signature banana cake, pink hummus snack, and her pandan gula melaka heavenly cakes
✨You guys not only turned up, spent your previous weekend to hang out with me, bought my works & merchandise, signed up my classes, helped me take tonnes of photos and videos, sang and dance, and even brought me food & gifts!
✨Some of you even showed up for 2 days! I am so so touched by all your positive vibes!!
✨I'm glad I made the decision to organize my open studio at the magical The Hatchery Place I truly believe that art not only inspires, it also connects people. 🥰

It felt like I had thrown myself an early two-days Christmas party!! My warmest heartfelt gratitude to you all my dear friends!❤️

Thank you Ai Jou C for running the show with me, with all the preparations behind the scenes weeks before the event. Thank you Ai Ney for making such beautiful yummy vegan edible artworks for the people and tirelessly serving up food for them throughout the whole 2 days!

And the pro 📷photographer bros: Desmond, Kevin Yeoh and Robert, you guys are the supermen of The Hatchery Place !!!

Not forgetting Rabbani for manning the merchandise booth, YoongJian for silently helping behind the scenes with all your fairy touches. ✨💕🥰🙏🏻

I am very nervous!!!

This weekend, I will be opening the doors of my creative coliving home, my studio and my works to the public to come and tour around.
Why I'm so nervous?

Firstly, I am doing this art show as a sovereign, self-taught artist, with no backing up or represented by any galleries or organizations that will help to promote my work to their clientele of art collectors. Even though I have been painting and selling artworks to individuals for the past 12 years, the fear of failure and that nobody will buy my art at my event, is still very much real!!

Secondly, also a decision I made myself - I will be showing visitors my sketches and work-in-progress of all my ugly works that never made it to the public, to let everyone know that we must make lots of bad works before we get to the good ones. But, by doing this, I also fear critics and the feeling of extreme vulnerability.

Thirdly, for the first time too, we are opening up our private residential coliving home The Hatchery Place (where my studio room is located upstairs) for people to tour the rooms. This is another thing that I feel nervous about. After all, this is our sacred space where we curate for like-minded community to commune. What if people don't like our cat? What if .. what if...

Ah well.. I feel so much better after writing out all my crazy thoughts now since the event is definitely going to happen in 2 day's time! I shall put my trust and faith in humanity, in God, in people who love and support art and creativity. And lastly, I shall put faith and trust in myself. That I am doing good work and inspiring others, by following my passion and never look back the day I quit corporate in 2015.

Also thank you to the angels beside me who held my hand and stood by my side to help ever since I announced that I will be doing my open studio event:
And thank you sweet .jpeg who said yes immediately when I asked you to come sing for my event. 💕

I hope to see you passionate people this weekend too. Please drop by if you are free, and let me know you're coming so I can plan to brew more coffee/ tea. ☺️

Where: The Hatchery Place The Hatchery Place
49 Jln USJ 11/3D, Subang Jaya.

The doors are open to my "speakeasy" creative coliving home The Hatchery Place, where my studio is upstairs. It's a private viewing and chillaxing weekend with me.

It’s been something I’ve wanted to do for ages! To be able to meet you, my artlovers in a cozy setting, show you around and have a good old catch up!

Come and visit, see where I work and create. There will be a selection of paintings, prints, sketches, merchandize on display, cards and whatnots to flick through, all for you to browse and buy.

Also a chance to take a look at my "behind-the-scenes", my unfinished painting-in-progress, and rare artworks & sketches that I never show in galleries. Even the bedrooms are open for you to enter as I will display some works in there too!

I will serve some homemade vegan snacks lovingly prepared by our friend Ainey. We chat and hang out with art, while I'll demo how I paint my whimsical and recent abstract works. I'll be doing some sharing circles too.

COME & CHILL WITH ME!!

If you're free at any of the two days, just pick a convenient time & drop by for an hour or so, to view some art or say hi 😊.

Let me know your RSVP so we can prepare.

"Painting is a delicious daily meditation, a habit that I look forward to at the end of every day. Minuscule decisions are made every second. Paintings I create represent time, the time of my life. To me, there is nothing more satisfying than slow art and the daily evolution of a blank board becoming a finished work of my vision. I paint what I see - inside my mind.

What goes on in your entire being when you paint?
For me, a lot is going on.
The most obvious one is honing my painting skills. Next one is training my right brain.

The less obvious ones which I notice that's happening simultaneously when I paint is:
The opening of my heart, the quieting of my mind, the opening of the receiving channel for intuition, the releasing of resistance, the discovering of my own truths, and the delightful joy of experiencing all of the above.

:)

Something I'd like to share from someone I follow on FB about facing fear:

//How To Overcome Fear:

Identify the source of your fear.
Very much include the things that your mind doesn’t want to accept.

Allow yourself to stare at it, embrace it without flinching.
Dare to soberly imagine the worst case scenario.

Then ask yourself what you would do, and more importantly, who you would need to be if this occurred.

Once you’ve done this (very few can or will), then work out what you’d need to create the antithesis of this worst case scenario in your own experience.

You’ll emerge from this exercise with profound clarity and focused peacefulness of action.

Again, most cannot do this, being quite locked in to their beliefs.
But if you do, you’ll possess a grounded optimism based on reality.

The time has come! 😻
I'm so excited to announce the re-launch of my store today!!! 🎉🎉🎉 ->> www.thatblackcat.com

NOT LETTING THIS LOCKDOWN STOP MY ART FROM GOING PLACES

It's been a tough era these two years waiting for the world to reopen again. And I know you feel the same too. After sitting at home for far too long, I've decided to take my art into my own hands again - that is, to bring them to places where I can't go physically. So, for the past few months, I've been burying my head in the laptop everyday & night till the wee hours of the morning working on this store again.

I have always dreamed of having a physical store where all my artworks are printed onto my favorite lifestyle items like cushions, pillows, bags, mugs, walls, dresses, shoes, phone cases, stickers, t-shirts, journals, etc. Imagine walking into a wonderland of art where everything you use and wear is decorated with unique, whimsical & colorful art painted by your favorite artist!

What seems like a far-fetched dream before, now with print-on-demand, this dream of mine comes true virtually for me. I can create my artwork from home, design and sell my printed art merchandise online without having to carry an inventory. Once I create the product, I outsource the rest to e-commerce manufacturers. They then print, package, and ship the order to you for me.

Instead of waiting longingly for galleries, bazaars, and shops to reopen to get back to normal so I could show my art, I'm starting NOW, TODAY, selling my art products to you, from my home in Malaysia via www.thatblackcat.com

I'm feeling really glad that there are aspects of lives like this, that I can still take charge without waiting for external factors. I'm taking matters back into my own hands to follow through with my mission to put art in every corner in the world even though I'm sitting at home, perpetually locked down, waiting for the world to change. This gives me hope, motivation, and the drive to keep trudging on these struggling times.

And I hope, this gives you hope too.

Art has a magical effect on our soul, it inspires, and has an infectious drive to make people create. Artists & creators invent and build things despite uncertainty, because it’s what drives them.

Please have a look around.

And depending on where you are located, you can filter your search for products produced nearer to you, so you'll get them faster and cheaper shipping.

I hope you find something that you love so much that you place an order. Either way, do take a moment to share THATBLACKCAT with someone you know who loves colorful whimsical intuitive art or black cats! :)
