Gaslighting is a form of emotional and psychological abuse where someone manipulates you into doubting your own memory, perception, and sanity. They twist the truth, deny facts, and make you feel like you are losing your mind or imagining things.
The term comes from an old movie where a husband slowly dims the gas lights in their house. When his wife notices and asks about it, he tells her, "You are imagining things, the lights haven't changed at all." He does this to make her question her own reality.
How it is done by a husband?
Here are common examples in a marriage:
1. Denying what happened
- You say: "You shouted at me and said hurtful things earlier."
- He says: "I never did that. You are making things up. Why are you so delusional?"
Even though it clearly happened, he denies it so you start doubting what you saw and heard.
2. Making you feel you are too sensitive or crazy
- When you get hurt or angry about his actions, he says:- "You are just too sensitive."
- "Nothing is wrong with me, the problem is you."
- "Are you going crazy again?"
This makes you feel that your feelings are invalid and that you are the difficult one.
3. Twisting the story
- He will turn the situation around so that you look like the bad guy.
- Example: "I didn't cheat, I only did that because you were not being a good wife to me."
- Or: "I wouldn't have hit you if you didn't make me angry."
He makes you believe that his bad behavior is actually your fault.
The Goal of Gaslighting
The main goal is to make you lose confidence in yourself so that you become completely dependent on him. Eventually, you will believe only what he says and stop trusting your own judgment. ❤️🩹
