This is where the series ends. And where the practice truly begins.

I came back to Kathak to survive a difficult season. I stayed through the discomfort as penance. I built the discipline because the art demanded it. And somewhere in that long, unglamorous process, the practice became devotion.

Sat Chit Ananda is not a concept I can fully explain. But I have felt it — briefly, completely — in the space where rhythm and intention stop being two separate things.

That is what I dance toward now. Not mastery. Not performance. Not even healing, though healing has come.
I dance as an act of surrender. To something larger than technique, larger than ambition, larger than the story I've been carrying about who I was before and who I failed to become.

Kathak is my prayer. My body, the offering.
If you've followed this series from the beginning, thank you for witnessing this. Sharing this journey publicly is its own kind of bhakti.

"नृत्य मेरी साधना है, मेरी भक्ति है, मेरी दुआ है।"
Nritya meri sadhna hai, meri bhakti hai, meri dua hai.

There is no feeling of flow on the days when you're exhausted and the footwork still isn't clean and your mind is somewhere else entirely. There is only the choice — again — to stay.

Kathak demands a particular kind of discipline because it is precise. There is no approximation in classical dance. Your feet are either in time or they are not. Your hands mean something specific or they mean nothing. The art does not negotiate.
I used to think discipline was about willpower. I've learned it's about identity. You don't make yourself practice, you become the person for whom practice is simply what you do.

That shift took months. It didn't happen dramatically. One day I noticed I had stopped asking myself whether I felt like doing it. I just did it.

That's when I knew something had changed at the root level. Not in my technique. In me.

Discipline isn't the enemy of joy. It's the container that makes joy possible.

"साधना का कोई शॉर्टकट नहीं,
वो हर रोज़ माँगती है, और हर रोज़ देती भी है।"
(Sadhana ka koi shortcut nahin,
woh har roz maangti hai, aur har roz deti bhi hai.)
"Sadhana has no shortcut,
it asks of you every day, and gives back every day."

Somewhere around month three of returning to Kathak, the guilt arrived. Not as a whisper — as a flood.

I understood, in my body, what I had given up. Not just years of practice. Years of becoming. Of the self I could have been had I stayed.

I didn't have the luxury of collapsing into that guilt. So I did something different, I let it become the reason to stay.

Every class I didn't want to attend became penance. Every hour of uncomfortable repetition, an act of reparation to the art, to the lineage, and to a younger version of myself who deserved more fight than I gave her.

This is also karma yoga in its most embodied form. You cannot change what was abandoned. You can only choose, today, to show up differently.

The body holds what the mind refuses. And sometimes the path back to yourself runs directly through the thing you walked away from.

When I returned to Kathak after 22 years, my body remembered the longing but not the language. My feet knew they were supposed to know this. They didn't.
Every class was uncomfortable. The repetition was relentless. My knees ached. My ego ached more.

There's a particular kind of discomfort in being a beginner at something you were once becoming good at. You're not starting from zero, you're starting from loss. And loss is a heavier place to begin.

But perseverance isn't the glamorous thing we make it sound like on social media. It isn't a montage. It's just showing up on the days when you genuinely don't want to, and moving your feet anyway.

I kept going because stopping again was not something I was willing to do to myself twice.

That decision — quiet and unglamorous as it was, is the only reason I'm still here.

"मुश्किल था हर क़दम, पर रुकना और भी मुश्किल था।"
(Mushkil tha har qadam, par rukna aur bhi mushkil tha.)
"Every step was hard. But stopping was harder."

I gave up Kathak at a time in my life when everything felt like a fight I couldn't win. The art itself had become hard, and instead of fighting for it, I quietly let it go.

For 22 years, I carried that absence without naming it.

I came back to dance at one of the lowest moments of my adult life. I wasn't looking for a practice. I wasn't looking for growth. I was just looking for somewhere to put the weight I'd been carrying.

What I found was therapy. Not the kind with answers, the kind with release.

Dance didn't fix anything. It just reminded my body that it already knew how to move through hard things.

That was enough to begin.

This is the first of five. A series on what Kathak has been for me, in the order I found it.

In the quiet of a backyard, beneath open skies, we found rhythm. ✨

My sister-in-law (soul sister) and I sharing a Chakradhar Paran. one year into our Kathak journey and our very first dance post together. A small milestone, a beginner's step, and a reminder that growth happens one practice, one spin, and one beat at a time.

Honoring the tradition, embracing the process, and celebrating the joy of learning. 🙏

Sang it. Danced it. Felt it. Lived it.

Some colors are thrown at you by others without permission, the rest you reclaim for yourself. 🎨
