Is there a more appropriate season than spooky season to remind us all that “some monsters have manners”? 👻🎃

Polite and good are not the same thing.

Some mornings the ocean hands you a whole sermon.

La Jolla, early and gray. A tangle of sea lions asleep, cuddled and nesting in the salt air, and one tiny pup who wasn’t quite right. While I watched, a bigger one crossed the rock just to lie down beside him.

To see how the well ones still come close. To witness how no one was left to rest alone.

Tenderness needs no words and still I find myself trying to explain the wave of emotion as I witness this love.

A few falls ago, I watched an orange oak leaf hang in a window screen for days.

I still don’t know if it was caught or held.

Found a beautiful Luna this morning.

They only live about a week as adults. No mouth, no stomach. Everything they would ever spend was stored in the body before the wings opened.

She calls into the dark. He has antennae built to catch it from a mile away, and he flies toward a call he cannot see. That’s the whole design. For finding each other.

We’re all calling out in the dark. Something out there is built to hear it.

A week of wings, and all of it spent on the connection.

I had the great honor of reading some of my poems at Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe this evening.

It was a dream come true and I could not be more grateful. Thank you so much to Malaprop’s and to Mildred Barya for having me.

The quartet was amazing, and I made three new friends. Thank you to Dan Kraines , Mark Caskie, and Jay Bryan.

My lineup:

Grounded and reaching. Reaching and grounded.

I keep writing my way back to that. Not the choice between them. The both.

You can be furious and still be tender. You can want to burn something down and want to plant something in the same afternoon. I have never once found those to be at odds.

Anger is not in opposition to faith. Some days it is the most faithful thing in the room.
