Legacies Revisited | The Dawn of a New Stagecraft (1946)

In 1946, Indian National Theatre witnessed a major shift in theatrical expression when Shanti Bardhan, fondly known as Shantida, transformed Jawaharlal Nehru’s Discovery of India into a living performance.

Moving away from realism, the production embraced symbolic expressionism, using the human body as metaphor to explore the enduring values of the Indian spirit. Rooted in Manipuri and Tipperah traditions, the choreography brought together classical movement and striking modern imagery, including stylized “machine men” reflecting an industrialising nation.

The ensemble featured Uday Shankar as the head mechanic, while Shantida himself performed as the British soldier and the drummer. During rehearsals at the Madgaonkar bungalow in Borivali, collaborators like Guru Parvati Kumar, Sachin Shankar, and Narendra Sharma also lent their voices to the choreography, shaping the performance collectively.

First staged at Rang Bhavan, The Dawn of a New Stagecraft marked a bold and symbolic renaissance in Indian performance history, where movement, ideology, and artistic expression came together in powerful new ways.

Revisited today through the archives of INT Aditya Birla Centre for Performing Arts, the production remains a reminder of a time when theatre expanded beyond realism and embraced a new visual language.

Founded in 1944, in pre-independence India, Indian National Theatre began with a vision to take theatre to the people.

Led by pioneers like Damubhai Jhaveri, Mansukh Joshi, Gautam Joshi, Naran Mistry and Chandravadan Bhatt, INT didn’t just stage performances. It created a movement. From travelling productions across Bombay to nurturing English, Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi and Parsi theatre; from children’s plays to experimental storytelling; from folk traditions to intercollegiate platforms, INT shaped how generations experienced the stage.

Over 8 decades of countless stories and infinite applause later, the curtain is about to rise again at the INT Aditya Birla Centre for Performing Arts, continuing to shape the legacy of its pioneers. 🎭

Legacies Revisited | Chalo Zer Paiye (1953)

Indian National Theatre’s Chalo Zer Paiye was a big hit that mixed murder with plenty of laughs. Directed by and starring Phiroz Antia, the play was based on Joseph Kesselring’s Arsenic and Old Lace, showing how family madness could be truly hilarious.

At the centre were two “sweet” elderly sisters with a deadly habit, poisoning their lonely guests with a glass of homemade wine. Around them, the house slipped into chaos, with a body hidden in a window seat, one nephew discovering the truth, and another digging graves in the basement.

The madness only deepened with the arrival of a dangerous relative, whose face had been altered by a messy plastic surgery.

With strong performances and a fast-paced narrative, the play proved that even a dark story about “mercy killings” could keep audiences laughing from start to finish.

Revisited today through the archives of INT Aditya Birla Centre for Performing Arts, Chalo Zer Paiye remains a memorable example of comedy is built on the unexpected.

For centuries, theatre has been a medium for cultures to remember their stories and pass them on.

In India, some forms go even further.

Recognised by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, ritual theatre forms like Kutiyattam, Ramlila, Ramman, and Mudiyettu carry shared threads of divine storytelling, sacred spaces, and entire communities coming together.

Passed down over generations, they blur the line between stage, ritual, and everyday life.
