Bridging contemporary African art and Japan, space Un presents Mārram: Inspire / Expire, an installation by Nathalie Vairac first presented at the 2025 edition of Tokyo Gendai.

Focusing on salt and its history in Japan, as well as its transformative qualities, the work invites viewers into an intimate encounter with time, ritual, and presence.

The performance will be staged in the gallery only five times, offering a rare opportunity to experience the work in its intended form.

Having moved from its space in Nishi-Azabu, A Lighthouse called Kanata celebrates the opening of its new location in Omotesando with an exhibition titled OPENING CEREMONY II, featuring works by artists including Sueharu Fukami, Kan Yasuda, Niyoko Ikuta, Joseph Walsh, Ayane Mikagi and more. Showcasing a range of materials across ceramics, glass, metal, and painting, this exhibit embodies the gallery’s focus on materiality, technique and beauty.

🎤 Artist interview: Bao Vuong (Verduyn Gallery)
アーティストインタビュー🎤

これらの海の風景画は、Bao Vuong が家族とともに体験した、ベトナムからの強制的な船での脱出の記憶とトラウマに基づいて描かれています。当時、彼はまだ幼く、その出来事を直接記憶してはいませんが、その記憶は彼の人生を通じて常に心の中にありました。

本インタビューでは、Tokyo Gendaiへの初訪問を振り返るとともに、彼の絵画に込められた感情、そしてそれぞれの作品に潜む「希望」について語っていただきました。

These seascapes by Bao Vuong draw on the memory and trauma of his family’s forced flight from Vietnam by boat. Vuong was just an infant, and while it is an experience he does not remember, the artist has carried it with him his entire life.

In this interview, the artist reflects on his first visit to Japan for Tokyo Gendai, as well as the emotions that guide his paintings and the hope that lies within each of them.

彫刻と写真という異なる表現方法を用いながら、永井天陽と川谷光平とは「庭」にまつわるイメージを出発点として新作を制作。その視覚的印象は可愛らしさや美しさをまといながらも、そこには現代社会や文化のあり方をめぐる静かなアイロニーが潜んでいます。「庭」という装置を通じて、自らの視線の軌跡をたどり、多様な読み解きと想像の余地をお楽しみください。

Solaya Nagai and Kohei Kawatani present new works inspired by the imagery of the “garden,” using the different mediums of sculpture and photography.
While their visual impressions carry charm and beauty, they also hold a quiet irony that reflects on contemporary society and culture.
Through the “garden” as a device, viewers are invited to follow the artists’ gaze and find space for multiple interpretations and imagination.

薄久保香と大庭大介による二人展「第三の径」では、二人が提唱する「絵画実験工房」のコンセプトを展開させた新作が並びます。現在、京都を拠点とする二人にとって、絵を描くという行為は論理や構造だけでは語れません。偶然や直感、神秘性こそが創作の原動力。彼らはそれを“第三の径”と呼び、本展のタイトルとしています。

This two-person exhibition features new works that emerge from Kaoru Usukubo’s and Daisuke Ohba’s ideal of a “workshop for experimental painting.” Both currently based in Kyoto, on view are their new works that visualise the continuity of chance and invisible presences. For both artists, the act of painting cannot be explained through logic or structure, and consider instinct and chance as essential forces in the creative process. They refer to this as the “third path,” an idea that forms the title of this exhibit.
