I used to think my rabbit liked being held until I learned how they actually feel about it... !!!
When I first started caring for rabbits, I couldn’t help myself.
They’re so soft, so tiny so unbelievably adorable , all I wanted to do was pick them up and hold them close and sometimes, they would just stay there quietly in my arms. I thought that meant they liked it. But over time, I learned something that changed the way I interact with them completely. Most rabbits don’t actually enjoy being picked up. Not because they don’t love you but because of instinct. Rabbits are prey animals. Being lifted off the ground can feel, to them like being caught by a predator.
So instead of comfort, they often feel fear even if they stay still. That stillness? It’s not always relaxation. Sometimes, it’s just them freezing. When I realized this I felt a little guilty. Now, I do things differently. I sit on the floor. I let them come to me. I gently pet them when they’re relaxed and comfortable in their own space and something beautiful happened. They started trusting me more. They follow me around. They rest beside me.Sometimes, they even nudge my hand asking for attention. It turns out, love for a rabbit isn’t about holding them tight.
It’s about making them feel safe enough to come close on their own.
Do your rabbits like being held or do they prefer staying on the ground?I’d love to know how they show you trust 💬 🐇
