“Turning Towards Winter.” There’s a specific feeling the woods have when fall arrives. The trees and their inhabitants begin to quiet, the sun is still warm, but an occasional breeze carries a cool whisper of the impending winter chill and the dry rustle of remaining leaves.

It’s soothing and warm in a way, but also brisk. These are the feelings that I wanted to capture in this image.

I took two images in the same spot. I shot the first one with a very slight shake of my camera, just enough to soften things and give movement to the leaves. I took the second photo “normally” with a high shutter speed and a deep depth of field. Then, in Photoshop, I added a texture to further soften the first image, and then masked in a few motionless leaves here and there to bring back a few hints of edginess.

“A grammatical pause.” This looked like a swirling leaf comma to me! And while we are on the subject, I, for one, am a big fan of the Oxford comma. As they say, .

For example, using an Oxford Comma, one might write:

“I’d like to thank my dog, my best friend, and my teacher”

as opposed to:

“I’d like to thank my dog, my best friend and my teacher.”

On second thought, this example may not actually support my preference for using Oxford commas.

Never mind. 🙃

"The Stand" I just love photographing this stand of trees in the fall using ICM (Intentional Camera Movement) because of the color variety. The leaves on the left belong to a Maple tree that turns a brilliant, fiery orange in the fall. The leaves on the right belong to a Japanese Maple tree that hadn't quite begun showing off its fall colors.

For this image, I wanted to use a slow shutter speed to capture the dance between a tulip tree (Liriodendron tulipifera) and a gentle fall breeze. I feel certain it was a foxtrot (slow slow quick quick!) 💃❤️😊

Miss Moochie May had her own photo session too! Her eyes are two different colors, and they are just so expressive! In this photo, I wanted to capture how striking her blue eye is against her black-and-white coat!

She’s the sweetest girl ever, and she was very brave! I adore Great Danes for their sensitivity and big hearts (literally and figuratively!) I do my very best to make sure photo shoots are fun and stress free, especially with Great Danes who also remember everything!

You did a great job, Moo! Thank you for letting me take your picture! I love you sweet girl! ❤️

I grew up in Colorado, so I’m accustomed to cold weather. Still, the relentless ice from Winter Storm Fern was unlike anything I’d ever seen. I was lucky. My home stayed intact, I remained safe, and I was only without power for four days. Yet many others endured the chill far longer, suffered serious property damage, and some sadly lost their lives. Recovery is still underway, and cleanup will take time. Please keep Nashville in your prayers as the community works toward normalcy.

We lost an incredible number of trees, and every time one snapped in the forest, it sounded like gunfire. The loss has literally reshaped the horizon formed by the ridges surrounding my home. It’s heartbreaking to see so many beloved trees, ones I used to photograph, gone. I captured a photo of this “miracle” tree just after the storm passed, perched on the ridge, still standing and bathed in gentle sunlight. The image gave me hope. A few days later, I casually crossed paths with a neighbor who looked at me and quietly said, “We made it through.” That sentiment is exactly what this picture represents for me.

Higher degree of difficulty awarded if the stick is bigger than the dog?

“Tennessee Foxy River Otter” (Vulpes L. canadensis Tennesseensis) Never in a million years did I think I would see a Tennessee Foxy River Otter in the wild much less a domesticated one. They are extremely rare!

Just kidding… this is Sawyer, and she is a 100% Canis familiaris Proverbs 12:10 Animal Rescue alumni. She is truly living her best life as you can see!

But given her appearance and obsession with water, I had to ask her mom, , if she was part fox and part river otter! Without missing a beat, Laura replied yes, she is in fact 1/8th fox and 25% river otter! 😂

I’ve known Sawyer since she was a puppy, and it was great to get the chance to take these pictures of her in her favorite habitat! I have missed you Laura and Sawyer! I was so good to see you both again!

P.S. Sawyer's "rare breed" species name and taxonomic rank was inspired by . She a creative force, and her wonderful humor and hard work has helped so many of our Nashville MACC shelter pets find their furever homes!
