Written by Mary Stevenson’s daughter, Kathleen, and read at her funeral, this poem captures Mary’s love of bowls, her determination and the lasting memories she leaves with our community.
Mary, Queen Of Shots
She held her bowls close to her heart,
They gave her strength, they gave her a start.
And when the darkness took her sight,
She found a way to keep the fight.
The green became her special place,
Where determination showed upon her face.
She didn’t see the jack ahead,
But knew exactly where her bowl should tread.
With every roll and every shot,
She showed the world just what she’d got.
No obstacle could make her stop,
She was a fighter right to the top.
Bowls were more than just a game,
They brought her joy, her pride, her fame.
And everyone who knew her well
Has stories that they’ll always tell.
Then came her moment, proud and bright,
A gold medal shining in the light.
And from that day, forever more,
“Mary, Queen of Shots” was what she wore.
She may have left this world today,
But her spirit never fades away.
For every bowl that rolls along,
We’ll hear her laughter, feel her strong.
So rest now, Mary, your battle’s done,
Your final bowl has finally run.
But on every green, your memory stays,
A little piece of you always plays.
And when the jack is sent away,
We’ll think of you and smile that day.
Our Queen of Shots, forever true,
The bowls may stop - but never you. ❤️
