THAT'S A WRAP! 🎬

Three unforgettable days. Dozens of stories. Hundreds of conversations. Countless memories.

As the curtains close on the 8th edition of the Rolling Film Festival, we leave Kino Armata with full hearts and renewed hope in the power of cinema to bring people together.

This year's theme, "Shared Memories," reminded us that while our histories may differ, stories have the unique ability to connect us across cultures, generations, and borders. Through films, discussions, music, and encounters, we celebrated not only Roma cinema but also the values of dialogue, representation, and mutual understanding that define the spirit of our festival.

Our deepest gratitude goes to every filmmaker, panelist, artist, moderator, volunteer, and audience member who made this edition so meaningful.

A special thank you to our guests Professor Cécile Canut, Tobiasz & Joanna Gorniak MBE, Petro Rusanienko, Ismet Sijarina, and everyone who travelled to Kosovo to share your stories, knowledge, and inspiration with us.

Who tells our stories—and who shapes the way they are remembered?

Our panel "Self-Representation in Art and Culture," moderated by Rina Gosalci, brought together three voices working from different perspectives but with a shared vision: ensuring that Roma communities tell their own stories.

Conversations like these remind us that self-representation is not only about telling our own stories—it is about shaping the future of how our communities are seen, understood, and remembered.

The second day of the Rolling Film Festival began with one of the conversations that will stay with us long after the festival ends.

Under the theme "Shared Memories, Divided Histories," we had the privilege of welcoming Professor Cécile Canut from Université Paris Cité and Université Sorbonne Nouvelle, a linguist and anthropologist whose work explores language, migration, memory, and the voices of marginalized communities, alongside filmmaker Tobiasz Gorniak from the United Kingdom.

Together, they invited us to reflect on how memory is shaped, whose stories are preserved, and why representation matters. Through different perspectives—from academic research to personal filmmaking—they reminded us that history is never just about the past; it continues to shape who we are today.

Tobiasz's film "That Boy" gave a deeply personal dimension to these conversations. His honest storytelling about identity, belonging, and growing up as a young Roma man resonated with many in the audience, showing that our most personal stories often become the most universal.

A heartfelt thank you to Professor Cécile Canut and Tobiasz Gorniak for travelling all the way to Kosovo to share your knowledge, experiences, and generosity with our audience. Your presence enriched the festival and reminded us that meaningful dialogue begins with listening to one another.

These are the encounters that give life to the spirit of the Rolling Film Festival.

Day 1 of rolling is officially in the books!
What a fantastic start, successful sessions, great energy, and an incredible audience that brought enthusiasm, curiosity, and positive vibes from start to finish.

As they left their homes and gathered at the bus stops, there was already a sense that some new memories are going to take place. The buses filled with young people, families, friends, and neighbours. Conversations began on the road to Prishtina, mixing excitement with curiosity about the stories waiting to be discovered.

Arriving at Kino Armata, they joined a growing crowd at the entrance. Some paused to look at the festival posters, others searched for familiar faces. In the hallways, people moved from one conversation to another, stopping to take photographs with filmmakers and guests, sharing smiles and memories before the lights dimmed.

Soon, families looked for empty seats, children settled beside their parents, and the noise of the foyer slowly gave way to the silence of anticipation. Then the silver screen came alive.

For the next few hours, the audience travelled together through stories, emotions, and distant worlds. They laughed, listened, reflected, and sometimes saw pieces of themselves in the lives unfolding before them. And while the journey home would begin once the credits rolled, some of those images would remain—carried back on the same buses, into the same homes, becoming memories that might stay with them forever.

As I looked around Kino Armata on opening night.

Volunteers dressed in white moved quietly through the crowd, welcoming guests and guiding them through the space. In the hallways, words flowed in many languages—Albanian, Romani, Serbian, English, French—sometimes understood, sometimes translated, but always shared. For a few hours, these voices blended into a single conversation.

Inside, the silver screen illuminated faces from different communities, generations, and backgrounds. People laughed together, listened together, and reflected together. The cinema became more than a venue; it became a crossroads of cultures, memories, and experiences.

Moments like these remind me why the Rolling Film Festival exists. Not only to screen films, but to create encounters. To offer a place where differences are not barriers but invitations to learn from one another. In a world often divided, there is something powerful about gathering in the dark, facing the same screen, and sharing the same story.
