In business, we often strive to find the right answer, yet failures usually stem not from the answer — but from asking the wrong question. Sales rose briefly, but customer trust eroded, and profits declined. The real issue wasn’t the answer — it was the wrong question from the start.

The key insight: A brilliant answer to a wrong question is still wrong.
To avoid this “framing bias,” McKinsey suggests three practical steps:
1. Follow the thread – start from the desired outcome and trace back to the root cause.
2. Challenge the frame – invite diverse views and question underlying assumptions.
3. Pause to reflect – slowing down to ask “why” can lead to better, longer-lasting decisions.
