The Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture is located in northwestern Xinjiang, stretching along the northern foothills of the Tianshan Mountains and bordering Russia and Mongolia to the northeast and Kazakhstan to the west. It is often said: "If you do not visit Xinjiang, you will not realize how vast China is; if you do not visit Ili, you will not know the true beauty of Xinjiang." Historically, Ili served as a vital hub on the ancient Silk Road and is renowned as a "land of melons and fruits" thanks to its warm climate and abundant rainfall. Visitors flock here to admire endless, lush green grasslands and a vibrant tapestry of wildflowers. One of the most famous grasslands in Ili is the Kalajun Grassland. In the Kazakh language, "Kalajun" means "black wilderness"; the area is rated as a national 5A-level scenic spot and is included in the list of "100 Spectacular Scenic Spots in Northwest China." It is a magical landscape where verdant meadows dotted with colorful blooms and grazing sheep blend harmoniously against a backdrop of majestic snow-capped peaks. The area is also home to the white round tents of nomadic Kazakh herders, who sometimes welcome visitors. The Kalajun Scenic Area comprises five main zones: East Kalajun Grassland, West Kalajun Grassland, Kuokesu Canyon, the Central Tianshan Snow Peak Scenic Area, and the Tianlai Forest Scenic Area. Among these, the East and West Kalajun Grasslands attract the most visitors, followed by Kuokesu Canyon, while the remaining two areas see fewer tourists.
