Many of you have been asking what Therapeutic Art actually is... Here I am sharing an example of how I used it to regulate my own angry mood.
I was feeling angry. Irritable, reactive β that kind of mood where everything feels like too much and everyone is getting on your last nerve.
So I decided to use my art therapy to work through it, rather than to take it out on the people around me. I sat down with my art materials and worked through it. Three images. No artistic skill required β just honesty.
First I drew my mood β colours and movements that matched what I was feeling. I wanted words but only one came. "Overwhelm."
So then I drew myself β tiny stick figure, right in the middle β and all around me, every demand that was pulling at me. Deadlines. House projects. Bermuda things. Mess. Neglected family. Neglected friends. Plays approaching. Exercise I kept skipping.
Seeing it all on the page was a revelation. No wonder I was overwhelmed. Every new request was adding on this, already heavy load.
Then I asked myself β how do I make this manageable? Third image. Me at a desk calling "NEXT" β and every single demand forming an orderly queue. One at a time. They could all wait their turn.
Three stick figure drawings and I went from simmering to calm, clear and back in control.
That's therapeutic art. It's not about being creative or artistic. It's about using the creative process to access what's really going on β the feelings, the patterns, the things that words don't always reach.
If this resonates, Still Me workshop, for women who are struggling thrpugh perimenopause and menopause, is my upcoming therapeutic art workshop β a small, safe space to explore what's going on for you, using creativity as your guide.
Tuesday 21st and 28th April, $160 for both sessions.
