A windswept Monterey cypress reaching over the rugged California coast, where warm blush light meets brilliant Pacific blue.

Itā€™s interesting how painting works. (Note- this is still in progressāš ļø)

Spent hours painting the bluff, the sky, and the mountainsā€¦ just so I could cover half of it with a giant coastal tree. šŸŒ²šŸ˜‚

Sometimes making art means putting your favorite work underneath the next layer. I keep telling myself: Trust the process.

The bluff, the sky, the mountainsā€”they all had to exist before the tree could belong there.

Sometimes the work no one sees is what makes the final piece come alive.

Funny how paintings have a mind of their ownā€¦

This one started with a simple idea: a dramatic Monterey cypress overlooking the ocean. The tree was supposed to be the star.

Then I started building the bluff.

One ledge became three. A cave appeared. The rock formations kept asking for more texture, more cracks, more layers, more depth. Before I knew it, Iā€™d spent days completely obsessed with cliffs instead of the tree.

Sometimes the painting tells you what it wants to become, and your job is just to listen.

The tree is still comingā€¦ but first these rocks demanded their moment. šŸŒŠšŸŽØ

We just got back from an amazing cruise, and then COVID decided to hitch a ride home with us. šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø

Since Iā€™m stuck resting, I figured it was the perfect excuse to try something completely newā€”colored pencils! Definitely outside my comfort zone, but every new medium teaches me something.

Hereā€™s to getting healthy, getting back to painting, and enjoying the journey of becoming the artist I want to be. ā¤ļø

Leaving for our special 250th birthday for America cruise celebration on Saturday, we planned a year ago.
But my new painting is just calling meā€¦.

I feel almost as guilty leaving it as I do my babies ( they always KNOW when we are about to leave).
My only cuddly companions are the kitties when Iā€™m painting, the pups have their own agendašŸ™„
But they KNOW when we are getting ready for a trip, so as Iā€™m creating tonight I have my favorite babes at my heels šŸ’•

I am not a naturally gifted painter.

Iā€™ve always been creative, but drawing and painting never came easily to me. In fact, painting intimidated me for most of my life.

So when I turned 50, I decided to learn anyway.

I canā€™t look at a blank canvas and just start painting. Instead, Iā€™ve developed a process that helps me learn: sketching, grids, transferring shapes, and building a painting one section at a time. I map it all out very specifically.

I also have OCD, which is one reason I always thought painting was out of reach for me. But Iā€™ve learned that what I saw as a limitation can also be a strength.

Everyone learns differently. There is no right way to create. My process is just a little different.

If youā€™ve always wanted to try something, donā€™t let the fear of not being naturally good at it stop you.

Where there is a will, there is always a way. šŸ’•

After six weeks, countless tiny brushstrokes, a few moments of doubt, and a lot of learning, ā€œBlush Hourā€ is finally finished.

Inspired by my California backyard at sunset, this painting became less about capturing a place exactly as it is and more about capturing how it feelsā€”the warm glow, the flowers, the winding path, and that magical hour when everything seems toā€¦blush.

And considering this is only my fourth painting, on my own, Iā€™m feeling pretty grateful for the journey this project challenged me with.
