Ding Ho Chinese Food was a beloved, 64-year landmark restaurant in Yakima, Washington, known for its classic mid-century charm, red leather booths, and inexpensive food and drinks.
• 1942: The building was originally constructed at 1502 W. Washington Ave. on the southeast corner of Washington and 16th avenues, near the Yakima Air Terminal.
• Early Years: It first operated as The Skyline Cafe, founded by Jack Harman (a local community figure also known for funding a local senior center and early ties to Kentucky Fried Chicken ventures).
• 1955: The establishment transitioned into Ding Ho Chinese Food, quickly becoming one of the premier spots in town during the mid-to-late 1950s for family dinners, affordable meals, and stiff drinks. It even earned a passing nod in local literary lore via Raymond Carver's short story "Nobody Said Anything".
• September 2019: After serving the community for decades under its iconic status, Ding Ho Chinese Food closed its doors at the Washington Avenue location. (Portions of the team or concept briefly reopened around 2020 as Tasty Wok on West Nob Hill Boulevard).
• January 2022: The historic Ding Ho building was demolished. While the physical structure was torn down, its memorable 39-foot-long neon sign was saved and placed into storage with plans for downtown restoration and display via the Yakima Downtown Rotary Club.
