In the Spring I was honored to have the opportunity for a collaboration with Nest and Magnum Foundation to work with a documentary photographer as part of a larger “Makers United Appalachia” initiative.
That photographer is from Kentucky. He called me in March and we made plans for him to be my shadow for four days in April.
Michael is a thoughtful, kind, and creative soul that my family took to quickly. He made me feel at ease and we had fun experimenting with different ideas of how to portray my story, the craft, my technique, etc. Not in the “traditional” sense, but with a more artistic approach. It is an experience I won’t forget and I was fortunate to have gained a new creative friend through this process.
This project reminded me of why I love broom making, how much my family, my home, and these mountains are a part of my process and a larger story.
I would love to know which one of these images is your favorite. Please let me know in the comments and bonus, I would love to know what the image makes you feel or the story you perceive from the whole body of work.
Stay tuned for more from this project. Thanks for traveling on this journey with me.
