While most brick & mortar hobby shops have had to temporarily close their doors, there are many that are still taking orders and shipping to their customers or have set aside special times for orders to be picked up directly. Some are even offering to meet you somewhere. Please try to support these shops, especially if they are your home track or a track you often travel to. Try to look past having to pay a little extra for shipping charges or sales tax. Sadly, there are some that just may not make it through this temporary shutdown.

While not discrediting the combination storefront/online, *small* online only and even some online/mobile shops, I think we can all agree, the above mentioned shops and tracks really need the extra support for the time being. Most have a huge overhead and depend on store sales and entry fees to survive.

So.....in an effort to recognize some of these shops and tracks, we are asking all of you to give them a shout out in the comments below. Shop owners are welcome to post details on your current operating conditions, any sales or special promotions you might have going on, etc.

Let's show some support and get these great "PLACES" some well deserved recognition during this trying time. ✌🏽

Please welcome our very first "Place" feature here on the page....

The track is D&J Raceway, in Orrville, OH.

They are located in the northeastern part of the state at 9377 Back Orrville Road, Orrville, OH. 44667

There is quite a storied history behind this facility. D&J's beginning dates back 52 years ago to 1968 when Don and Joyce Yoder opened D&J Hobbies.
The track itself has been in operation for 34 of those years. It was started in 1986 by Don (shop owner) and Mark Nussbaum. They quickly outgrew the space behind the shop and in 1989 moved the track to it's current location. It was in 1990 when current track owner, Kevin Scheibe, starting getting involved. Mark stepped down in the late 90's to go full size racing and in 2016, D&J's founding father, Don, passed away. It was then that Kevin took over full operation of the track. Joyce continues to this day to operate the hobby shop side of things but is in the process of selling the shop and contents. What a end of an era that will be!

But D&J Raceway has never skipped a beat and continues to move forward in a very positive manner. The family run tradition has continued with who Kevin acknowledges as his "right hand man" with the track's operation, his son, Kody Scheibe. Kevin also credits Jeff Trost, and many others for their help with the track's success.

On to some details of the track itself.....

It is considered a "rubber tire" track and has a 175 ft. run line. They utilize AMBrc scoring. See the chart for the MYLAPS transponders that will work here in the pics below. They feature a modern, very well laid out rules package utilizing DODC, RCCB and Salvas Mudboss rules. We will include those below as a general reference but there could be some minor changes to them so be sure to check the D&J page or message them directly with any questions.
We will also include their 2020 schedule and highlights in with the pics below. There you will see one of D&J's longest standing races, the 34th annual D&J Open Wheel Nationals on September 26th and 27th, 2020. Although Kevin states they are probably best known for their Kings Royal race which is slated for August 22nd, 2020 and is presented by Belton Motorsports.

A race on the the schedule that I personally think is very noteworthy is the D&J Truck Nationals and 2020 marks the 28th running of this race. Why is this noteworthy, you may ask? For any of you elder statesmen of RC dirt oval racing or just RC racing in general, such as myself, this immediately tells the long history of D&J Raceway. Stadium Trucks were once very popular on the dirt oval scene many many years ago. Nitro Stadium Truck (RC10GT's) were also very popular. To see them still running the electric stadium trucks in their weekly shows is a pretty darn cool thing.
Aside from just the stadium trucks, this era in general included some very challenging racing characteristics. Dirt oval conversion kits were very limited. Usually you just built your own. RC10 gold tub buggies were very popular as a base to start with. With 1200 and 1400SCR NiCd packs there were no warm up laps. 4 minute races were sometimes won by conserving your batteries for the first half of the race. Brushed motors, cutting coms, magnet zapping and a variety of different brush compounds and spring tensions all came into play. Rubber buggy and stadium truck tires were rock hard. Tire inserts had not even come along yet. At big races, tires were often thrown in the trash after just two heat races. There were no "bar" type tires, pin spikes were the norm. So many other variables came into play with the limited technologies back in the mid 80's. It truly makes me smile to know that there are still tracks out there such as D&J Raceway that has withstood the ups and downs of nearly 4 decades of change. An outstanding accomplishment indeed! Can you imagine all of the different products lines Don and Joyce had on their shelves over the years? Wow, this truly takes me back in time!

While all of the above mentioned names deserve credit, a lot is to be said of D&J's racers over the years. From the veterans of the track with their extended steel radio antennas of yesteryear going in all different directions, all the way down to the new racers that will be holding one of the newest, latest and greatest sophisticated radios to date for their very first time this year.
Congratulations to all involved.

Kevin and Kody have a great 2020 season planned, as you can see. So with a history spanning more than a half century, what does the future hold for D&J Raceway? We will only say this.....you will want to keep an eye on this little gem over the next year. The history book still has some unfinished chapters.

Please show D&J Raceway some love and go give their page a like. Or better yet, go check them out in person this year. I know I will be.

Our very first featured "Face" is someone I've been keeping an eye on for awhile now. What really caught my attention, as well as many others I'm sure, was his performance at this year's RC Chili Bowl. The young man I'm speaking of is........20 year old Robert Chapman from Grand Prairie, TX.

Robert has been racing since he was 8 years old. His home track is the ever popular Wild Bill's Raceway in Irving, TX. He and his father Ronnie Chapman oversee and run the track there.

Robert's first RCCB experience was in 2011 when he was much younger. He then returned in 2018 and 2019 with progressively better performances with his GFRP Mid-West Modified and GFRP Outlaw Sprint. This year he continued his forward progress by putting his Sprint solidly into the B-Main. But, it was a bit of a tough race, for everybody, and missed the transfer to the A-Main. He ended the long grueling week with a very respectful 14th out of 79 Outlaw Sprints. However, Mid-West Mod was a different story. Robert put his hot rod directly into the A-Main from the qualifiers for a solid 5th starting position. By lap 11 he made his way into 2nd behind the crafty veteran Max Flurer. Max ever so slowly started to pull away but what was impressive to me was the extreme pressure Robert withstood from another veteran racer in the form of none other than Dustin Malicoat. Dustin was right on Robert's deck lid a couple times and no further than 4 or 5 car lengths for the remaining 28 laps. Robert held on to finish just .848 ahead of Dustin. This ranked him 2nd out of 47 Mid-West mods for the week.

Here are some facts that caught my eye early on in the week.
And these numbers are often overlooked by the majority of us - driver consistency percentages. These are some of Robert's numbers from a mix of both of his classes......
92.16% - 97.01% - 93.28% - 98.31% - 92.90% to mention a few. Impressive to say the least. The 98.31 is dually impressive though. One might think that was achieved by starting on the pole of an easy heat. Not so. This was from his 1st qualifier of Outlaw Sprint in which he started in the 6th position and won it among the likes of Michael Brown, Randy Lathrop, Max Flurer, Brian Stanton and others. Out of approximately 386 cars and 189 drivers there was only one other driver that hit a driver consistency rating of 98% all week that I saw, a 98.04% in the Street Stock class. Impressive, to say the least.

I realize this driver feature is getting a little long but I want to include something else that shows a lot of character and makes this young man special.

Robert stated the following...........

"Something I'd like to add. We had a racer that passed away last year. His name was BJ Wilcox, the best person you'd ever meet. He did a lot for the rc community, even if you didn't know the guy, he would help you out. You break your car and can't run it for the remainder of the event, he would lend you his car. Just a great guy and honored to call him a friend. We hosted a benefit race for him last year, over 140 entries. I ended up winning Midwest Mod that night. Most emotional race I'd ever won. Coming down the drivers stand I started to cry tears of joy, I wanted to win it for him, and I pulled it off. A race I will never forget."

Robert also wants to acknowledge and thank Mr. Steve Crane for his hard work in putting together and promoting the memorial race for BJ. The event was named WFO for Wilcox.

In closing, Robert would like to thank his sponsors, which incude.....

TLR
JConcepts
Team Trinity
Performa
Horizon Hobbies
TeamSR
BOOM RC
Celph Designs

And last, but certainly not least, when asked if there were any friends or family he would like to mention, Robert concluded with this......

" As far as people I'd like to thank, No doubt my number one fan, my father Ronnie Chapman. He has made me the racer I am today. Without him my success isn't possible. He pushes me to be the best racer I can be and I appreciate everything he's done for me and all the opportunities he's given me throughout my racing career and to be able to enjoy Rc racing. His hard work in the pits goes unnoticed, so I always strive for the best results for him.
Great friends of mine, Nathan Dean and Trent Jenkins. Wild Bill's is also their home track, I am very fortunate to have such skilled and talented drivers to learn from. They've helped me so much over the years and I appreciate them more than they'll ever know."

Please show this young man some love, folks!

Hoping to have our first "feature" posted up later this evening. Still working out the details.
The question at hand is will it be a Face or a Place?
Stay tuned......
