Born in southeastern Kentucky and reared in southwestern Virginia, Kelly Stallard creates images of the people of Appalachia as a nod to her heritage.

Mountain folk are simply handsome people. This pencil took me hours and hours. I do not know who the people are, but likely they are some of my husband’s kin. Again, I had to use my imagination to draw from looking at an old black and white photo. It may not look like them in real life, but I am pleased with the outcome.

Another Appalachian piece for festivals. This one is from another old black and white photo of my husband’s grandmother - we think! Probably circa 1940. I am not sure what she is boiling. My husband’s guess is water to use on hogs to help remove hair after slaughter. That’s too terrible for me to consider, so I’m looking for other, nicer possibilities. What do y’all think she’s doing?

This year’s Mixed Pickles Christmas card. It will be ready for festivals in 2025.

I stepped away from my art desk for a while to build a second mountain, a plowed pond and and a raised track for my model train. I sculpted styrofoam insulation and then painted the pieces. I used premade products for the greenery.

With festivals in Appalachia in mind, I finished a colored pencil drawing. I found a clipping I had cut from a Coalfield Progress years and years ago of this woman. I hope I did her justice. What do you think??

Mixed Pickles is THRILLED to announce that snarky dog cards and gift tags are now ready to purchase at Buddy Lou’s in Hancock, Maryland! A wonderful restaurant that not only serves great food, but also provides a menu for dogs AND supports agencies that work to end pet homelessness. They are located adjacent to the C&O Canal and love cyclists! Couldn't ask for a better suited partner for Mixed Pickles Art!

I've already posted the Border Collie mug, and now here are a few more! Thanks to my wonderful friend Crystal Gage for making my art into mugs!! I think these will make great gifts. I will put a couple on Etsy asap for $12 each, but I am mostly interested in selling these at festivals.

I finished my coloring page! This was a fun side project, and though there are errors, I learned quite a bit about pencil techniques and color. Now, onto the next drawing!

Growing up, I had two older sisters with whom I spent hours devoted to coloring. Our eldest sister, Debbie, was a stickler for details - everything had to be perfect on her coloring page - and she made certain her two proteges followed the rules of correct coloring on their pages as well. My brother was born when I was 8 and missed the group coloring sessions, though he had his own lessons from Debbie when he was old enough to endure her tutelage. I still love to color. I have created a coloring book page and am in the process of coloring it now. It gives me a break from the more formal style of art I normally create. Tell me a story about your coloring experience, as a child or as an adult. Do you still love it as much as I do?
