We all know of Seminole palmetto fiber dolls. But, did you know before that, most Seminole dolls were wooden? Made mostly for personal use as toys in the early 1900s, the dolls would have been carved by men from one piece of soft wood. They featured carved or painted features, such as this doll. The cotton clothing, which would have been made by women, did not yet feature the distinctive patchwork. They are very rare! This doll features a full-length double tiered skirt and cape, along with sleeves.

It was originally purchased by David H. and Etta Waggaman sometime in the 1910s in the Fort Myers area. It was donated by their great-grandchild. (2017.17.1, ATTK Museum)

"Beneficial rains, what a transformation the earth has when this life's water visits us on a regular basis. The grass, the trees, and animals of all kind, all show their appreciation by showing beauty and growth. Florida is Florjda because of its sunshine, its warmth, and its water. Growing up in Okeechobee it would rain heavily, almost a guaranteed occurrence l, every evening, and before the last drops hit the ground we were barefoot, trying to run through every pond in that pasture. On the grasslands birds would flock to brush, and carefully prune feathers. Birds of all kinds, coming together to enjoy the water.

This paintkng gives me vibes about those easy times, when Florida was a little healthier, and everything had a place to go. But now, every now and again, after the rains you'll get a glimpse of those times.
