✋ Hand Numbness & Grip Issues

Why It Happens

• Nerve compression — Ulnar/median nerves get squeezed where your hands press on the bars

• Too much weight forward → all body weight through hands, not legs/core

• Wrong grip shape/size → narrows the wrist/nerve tunnel

• Bars too low / too far → wrists bent upward/downward → pinches nerves

• Vibration — road buzz, gravel vibration amplifies swelling in wrists
🖐️ Grip & Handlebar Shape — What Matters

• Grip diameter = critical

◦ Too thick → muscles work harder → fatigue → numbness

◦ Too thin → grip too tight → same problem

◦ Test: hold a pen naturally — your hand should close lightly, not stretch or squeeze hard

• Grip shape

◦ ✅ Ergonomic / flared — supports heel of hand, spreads pressure wide

◦ ✅ Palm relief cut-out — avoids pressing directly on nerve centre

◦ ✅ Flat/riser bars — wider stance → more hand positions → rotate hands often

◦ ✅ Drop bars — use tops, hoods, drops — change position every 10–15 mins

• Grip material

◦ Dual-density: soft outer = comfort; firm core = control

◦ Closed-cell foam or high-quality rubber — avoid hard plastic/slippery thin tape
🚴 Discipline-Specific Fixes

Road Bike

• Use hoods as main position — not drops or tops

• Bar tape: 2.5–3mm thick; add gel pads under tape

• Rotate bars slightly back → hands rest naturally, not sliding forward

Gravel / Flat Bar

• Wider bars = better leverage + more hand room

• Ergonomic grips with palm platform = game changer

• Bar ends or auxiliary grips = extra resting spot for long rides

• On gravel: relax grip — hold lightly, like holding a bird not a brick 🐦
⚠️ When to See a Pro

• Numbness lasts hours/days after riding

• Tingling in ring/pinky finger = ulnar nerve (common)

• Thumb/tingling = median nerve

• Doesn’t improve after setup changes → see a bike fitter or physiotherapist

🚲 STOP buying new saddles… until you check THIS

Struggling with saddle comfort? You’re not alone. And the answer is rarely “just a different saddle.”

More often than not — it’s the position, not the pad.

❌ Saddle feels great in the shop → painful on the road?
→ Too long stem / bars too far forward → you slide forward, all pressure on the nose

❌ Numbness / front pressure?
→ Bars too low → pelvis tilts forward → weight piles onto sensitive tissue

❌ Constant sliding forward?
→ Saddle nose tilted up → literally pushing you onto the narrow part

❌ Sore sit bones one side?
→ Saddle too far forward/back → your natural pedalling position fights the setup. A bikefit does not always involve replacing your saddle, matching the front of your bike to your body can often fix what felt like a bad saddle! ’s bikefit

🔬 Why It’s Different for Women

• Pelvis shape: Women generally have a wider pelvic structure and a wider infrap***c angle, so sit bones are further apart

• Soft tissue position: The v***a sits lower and more forward relative to the sit bones compared to male anatomy — meaning it lands directly where the saddle nose applies pressure

• Shorter distance from sit bones to p***c arch → front/p***c bone pressure builds more easily

• Men’s external tissues are positioned so they sit clear of the saddle surface; women’s sensitive tissues sit directly in the pressure zone

• Crucially: Unlike some adjustable parts, anatomy itself can’t be changed — so the saddle must match the body, not the other way around.

You can buy the most perfectly shaped, expensive saddle in the world — wrong angle + wrong reach = guaranteed pain and discomfort, every single time.
📐 Saddle Angle — the silent culprit

• Nose tilted up → all your weight pushes down on soft tissue → numbness, pressure, soreness.

• Nose tilted down → you slide forward constantly → arms/shoulders take your whole body weight → aching neck, shoulders, back, wrists

📏 Reach to Handlebars — the #1 hidden issue

This is massively underrated, especially for new riders:

• Too far / too low → you’re stretched out, pelvis tilts forward, you’re sliding on the saddle → saddle rubs, hurts, feels “wrong” — but it’s NOT the saddle!

• Too close / too high → cramped, elbows locked, upper body tension, back aches

🔑 The Reality Check
9 times out of 10: It’s not the saddle foam, shape, or brand — it’s angle + reach + height + fore/aft position. Change those, and your “bad” saddle might suddenly feel perfect.

Most people do it exactly backwards — buy a new saddle to fix a position problem, and it never works. 🚲

🚲 Common Beginner Bike Fit Mistakes.

❌ #1 Saddle WAY too low

Feels “safer” but kills knees, wastes power, causes fatigue

❌ #2 Saddle too far forward/back

Knee not above pedal → knee pain or back ache

❌ #3 Handlebars too far / too low

Stretches you out → sore neck/shoulders/back, numb hands

❌ #4 Locked elbows / death grip

No shock absorption → hand/arm/back pain

❌ #5 Adjusting everything at once

Can’t tell what’s working vs what’s making it worse

❌ 6 Ignoring discomfort

"It’ll go away” → turns into overuse injury.

Riding with upper body tension. What it costs you?

• Power loss: Tense shoulders, locked elbows, and a tight grip rob energy that should go into pedalling. You absorb pedal bounce instead of letting it flow.

• Comfort & pain: Stiff neck, sore shoulders, aching wrists/numb fingers, and upper-back fatigue. Tension travels down to your lower back too.

• Control & safety: Rigid arms can’t absorb bumps — you lose steering stability and react slower.

• Breathing: A hunched, tight chest restricts lung capacity → earlier fatigue.

Saddle too low:

• You lose significant power – your legs can’t extend fully to drive the pedal efficiently

• Extra stress on knees, quads and hips, leading to early fatigue and soreness

• You rock your hips side-to-side with every stroke, wasting energy and causing back ache

Handlebars too far away:

• You’re forced to overstretch, straining shoulders, neck, arms and wrists

• Your core stays constantly braced, draining stamina on long rides

• You can’t control the bike as steadily, and your weight shifts too far forward

The result: Every mile takes more effort, you feel worn out much sooner, and you end the ride stiff and sore – all from two simple adjustments that make a world of difference.

Endurance road bike: Slightly taller head tube, shorter reach, more relaxed frame angles. Puts you in a more upright, natural position. Takes pressure off your wrists, hands, and back — perfect for long days, centuries, or multi-day rides.

Other small differences

• Clearance: Often wider tyre clearance (28–35mm vs 23–28mm), so you can run more comfortable, grippier tyres.

• Gearing: Usually slightly easier gears to help with sustained climbing over long distances.

• Compliance: Frames often have built-in flex or vibration-dampening features to smooth out rough tarmac.

In short: same drop-handlebar feel, same road speed, but designed so you still feel good at the end of 60, 80, or 100+ miles.

Engaging your quads and glutes is exactly what makes the pedal stroke more efficient and smoother.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

• Quads (front of thighs): Do most of the work on the downstroke — pushing the pedal from top to bottom gives you forward power.

• Glutes: Kick in at the mid-to-lower downstroke, extending your hip fully to add extra drive and stop you from just using your knees.

• The benefit: Balancing both means less strain on knees and calves, a more circular motion instead of choppy pushes, and better endurance over longer rides.

A proper bike fitting turns a good used bike into one that feels made for you — no more discomfort, wasted power, or handling issues.

Here’s why it works especially well for used bikes:
✅ Fixes mismatched stock settings that don’t fit your body
✅ Eliminates knee, back, or wrist pain from poor position
✅ Boosts pedaling efficiency and speed
✅ Improves control and reduces injury risk
✅ Maximizes the bike’s value and lifespan

A typical fit covers saddle height/fore-aft/angle, handlebar height/reach, stem length, crank length, and cleat position. Even small adjustments make a huge difference.
