We love this and hope to see more crosswalk art across the Triad, including in the City of Winston-Salem, NC - Government!

Creative Greensboro partnered with local artist Tamra Hunt to create a new crosswalk mural at the intersection of Haywood and Neal streets in the City’s Glenwood neighborhood. The artwork will be officially unveiled at a ceremony at 6 pm on June 23 at the crosswalk site. In case of rain, the ceremony will be held at Glenwood Together, 1310 Glenwood Ave.

Hunt, a member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, hosted four events last fall at the People’s Market to share personal stories of past and present Glenwood residents who are also part of the Indigenous Native American community. She designed the crosswalk mural based on the stories and themes they shared. The artwork includes a braid, an eagle feather, symbols to represent people, unity, and community, and colors of the healing circle: red, black, yellow, and white.

The June 23 event will include music, a traditional ceremony to honor the new mural, and guest speakers including residents who shared stories at the People’s Market events. Representatives of the Tribal Council of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina, Guilford Native American Association, Greater Glenwood Neighborhood Association, Glenwood Together, and the People’s Market will also offer remarks.

Hunt was born and raised in Greensboro with a passion for using art to create unity within diverse communities. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Tennessee with a concentration in painting and drawing.

Hunt completed the crosswalk art on May 20. It is a special project of Creative Greensboro’s Neighborhood Arts Program.

About Neighborhood Arts
Neighborhood Arts supports artists and neighborhood residents as co-leaders to connect communities with creativity. The program brings creative experiences close to home through arts activities and beautification projects that respond to neighborhood priorities. Through the program, Creative Greensboro has committed over $150,000, to date, toward creative projects in the five neighborhoods identified for reinvestment in the city’s Housing GSO plan. The City’s Housing and Neighborhood Development, Transportation, Parks and Recreation, and Library departments provided additional support for the initiative.

Founded in 2019, Creative Greensboro provides support for, ensures access to, and drives awareness of Greensboro’s creative community. Through a range of programs, services, and partnerships, Creative Greensboro supports the development of a vibrant city. Learn more at www.creativegreensboro.com.
