I’ve gently crafted this night scene into its final form.
It carries a quiet stillness, and I’m sharing it here with a short poem that accompanies the mood it settled into.
When Evening Settles into Silence 9x12 oil

When evening settles into silence,
the world softens its edges,
and the water holds the sky
like a secret it promised to keep.

While the moon lowers its voice
to a whisper
and nothing moves but the quiet,
slipping ever gently across the land,
reminding the heart
what stillness is for.

Autumn Mood · 30x40 oil
Painted in 2006 and inspired by scenes from Lost Maples State Natural Area. Even after twenty years, I’m still drawn to the quiet water, the softened light, and the calm atmosphere that originally inspired the piece. It remains one of those paintings that carries its mood with it.
Commission paintings available.

I’ve been grateful for the recent support and new followers — thank you. This is my latest 4x6 miniature, “Evening’s Quiet Glow.” I wanted to explore that gentle transition of light when the day softens and the landscape settles into a calm hush. It’s a small piece, but one with a quiet mood I really enjoyed painting. Link in the comments to a video of the painting and to my eBay auction for this piece.

Eastern Quiet — A Little Story Behind the Painting
Some paintings behave.
This one… did not.

Eastern Quiet went through three completely different lives before it finally settled into the version you see now. The first one had cows in the field—peaceful enough, but it just didn’t say anything. So I painted over it.

The second version brought in a fire and a lone figure, and that helped. The mood shifted, the story deepened. But even then, it still felt like the scene was holding back, like it hadn’t quite found its voice.

So I painted over it again.

The final version—the night scene—is where everything finally clicked. The moonlight, the firelight, the quiet figure… suddenly the painting had the mood it had been asking for all along. Sometimes that’s the real work of being an artist: listening to the painting instead of forcing it to be something it isn’t.

This one has been through a journey with me, and now it’s ready for a new home. I’ll be offering Eastern Quiet on eBay, and sharing it here so you can see the evolution it went through. It’s always interesting how a painting can surprise you—even when you’re the one holding the brush.

Titled: The Eastern Quiet

A hush has fallen on the field, where twilight spills and golds that yield, to purples deep and softest rose- a sky that mourns yet never knows, the end of light is not the end, but just the curve where shadows bend.

The moon ascends with patient grace, a pale lamp in a fading place, it’s meager breath upon the land, like solace offered by a hand. It does not chase the sun away-it waits, it watches, it will stay.

A tree that weeps, stands alone, what silence here the evening knows- yet in that quiet, something seen: the hush before the heart takes wing.

So let the darkness gently start, it does not dim a steadfast heart. For even sorrow turns to light- the moon will remember hope in fading light.
