Cyder was more than a character in The Political Dog and Our Dog Pack. She was the steady Labrador voice in the room — loyal, observant, occasionally exasperated, and always carrying a tennis ball as if it were part of her job description.

A titled field dog and a star in nosework, Cyder approached work with intensity and joy. She loved the hunt, loved the game, and loved being with her people even more. She was a true Labrador in every sense: devoted, generous, funny, and endlessly hopeful that someone might throw the ball one more time.

In the cartoons, Cyder often seemed to have something important to say about the mess in the United States and the strange behavior of humans in general. Off the page, she had already said the important part through the way she lived — fully engaged, deeply loyal, and always ready for the next adventure.

Cyder lived 14½ years, leaving behind muddy paw prints, countless retrieves, and a silence that feels far too large.
