I was just listening to Freddie Jackson the other day.
Now I’m giving him his flowers with a heavy heart. 💔

His music lived on my Quiet Storm, my mixtapes, and now my Spotify playlists. “You Are My Lady” explains exactly why.

That voice could make a declaration of love sound tender and certain at the same time. He didn’t rush the feeling. He gave you room to sit with it. 🎶

And let’s be honest, standing out among the male voices of 80s R&B wasn’t easy.
Freddie stood toe to toe with the heavyweights, including my boy Luther Vandross.
I still think his name deserves to come up sooner when we talk about that era. 👑

In the full post, I’m revisiting the song, the hits, and the place his music holds in my life.

Come remember Freddie with me, and hear why this voice kept finding its way into my late nights. 💜

Dorothy Moore’s “Misty Blue” takes me straight back to my mother’s kitchen.
Mustard greens on the stove.
Her famous Thanksgiving stuffing.
That sweet potato pie.

Baby, something good was always cooking, and the music was just as good. 🥧

I was blessed with two mothers, but living with my birth mom during my senior year helped me understand exactly where my love of music came from.

I got it from my Mama. 💜
And she’s the one who introduced me to the blues.

One of her favorites, “Misty Blue,” started as a country song before Dorothy turned it into a soul classic in 1976.
That voice carries longing, hurt, and the kind of honesty my mother understood.

Every listen brings a piece of her back to me. Read the full post for the story behind that unforgettable recording and the woman who made it part of my soundtrack. 👑

Now how do you have a voice like Lisa Fischer’s and spend so much time singing background?
Baby… I would’ve needed her front and center. 🎙️

She sang behind Luther Vandross, Tina Turner and The Rolling Stones, but “How Can I Ease the Pain” gave her room to tell her own story.
And she told it.

That struggle between knowing somebody’s bad for you and still wanting them? Been there. Your brain’s ready to leave, but your heart’s still answering the door. 👀

Released on So Intense in 1991, this Quiet Storm classic became a No. 1 R&B hit and earned her a Grammy. 🏆

But what gets me is how she makes you feel every word before those high notes arrive. You’d think another solo album would’ve followed.

The story behind why it didn’t deserves your attention, too.
Come read the full post and revisit a woman who gave that microphone everything. 💜

Stevie Wonder made cheating sound entirely too happy. 😂
The rhythm is bouncy and upbeat, like nothing scandalous is happening at all. Meanwhile, the relationship is a complete mess. 👀

But what caught my attention first on “Part Time Lover” was that familiar voice scatting at the beginning.
It wasn’t Stevie. But I knew that voice.
It was Luther Vandross. And just like that… the song had me. 🎤

I’ve loved Stevie for as far back as I can remember, and this has always been one of my favorites.

Luther is officially singing background, but listen to how present he is.
His voice moves around Stevie’s and answers him until, to my ears, it feels more like a duet. Two voices I love on one song that still makes me turn it up. 💜

Come revisit this classic with me in the full post.
You might find yourself listening a little differently.

Y’all know I love Chris Brown’s music, and “Fallin’” is one of those songs that reminds me why.
I’ve watched him grow from that young man who could sing and dance into an artist whose voice keeps giving me more to appreciate.

You can hear that growth in this song.
The confidence, the control, those runs, knowing when to pull back and let a note do its job.

This is Chris giving me exactly what I love about R&B. 🎶

The first thing that grabbed me was his voice.
He sang on this one, y’all.
There’s a warmth that takes me back to the soul of the late 70s and 80s, while still sounding like him. 💜

Then there’s that moody, cinematic video, giving me Sinners energy and another reason to keep watching.
One listen turned into a half hour on repeat.
When I’m leaving my phone alone and letting a song ride, that tells you something.🔥

Come read what caught my ear and watch the video.
There’s more happening here than you might catch the first time. 👀

Don’t come for my girl Jasmine Guy.
She's been around and performing longer than most of y’all been alive.
Apparently, a woman aging naturally is now breaking news. 🙄
Meanwhile, I’d rather talk about that talent.

Actress. Dancer. Director.
Singer.🧑🏿‍🎤

Her 1990 debut album deserves another listen, and if you missed it the first time...
Let me put you on to it. 🎶

I loved Try Me, with Full Force behind it, and Another Like My Lover, produced by Timmy Gatling.
But my favorite favorite? Just Want to Hold You.
That’s my slow jam classic, and it still doesn’t get enough love. 💜
Honestly, her music career should’ve been bigger.
Did people have trouble seeing past Whitley?
I wonder. 🤔

Press play ▶️ and meet the woman behind that unforgettable character.
She's more than a Southern accent and a perfectly timed hair toss. 👏🏽

Come read the full post.
Give her her flowers!💐
Give her music another listen.
There’s a whole lot of talent there!

Everybody talks about Off the Wall and Thriller, but hold up. We skipped my favorite The Jacksons album.
Triumph.
I was 11 when this album arrived in 1980, already figuring out my own taste in music.

And baby, opening with Can You Feel It?
That’s how you get somebody’s attention. Those voices, that production, that enormous sound.

Then This Place Hotel brings the drama, and Walk Right Now gets you moving. Three favorites on an album where I’m never reaching for Skip. 🔥

The brothers produced this album themselves, and you can hear that family chemistry throughout.

Michael Jackson was on an incredible creative run, but his brothers helped make this record what it is.

These nine songs deserve their own flowers.💐 And because y’all know I love an extended mix, I added four bonus mixes and remixes to the playlist. 🎧

Start at the beginning and let the whole damn album ride.

I used to sit by the radio with my fingers ready to hit Play and Record, waiting for Meli’sa Morgan’s Do Me Baby.
Hoping the DJ wouldn’t talk over the intro.
That was streaming in 1985.
Very stressful streaming. 😂 📻

I already loved Prince’s original from Controversy, but when Meli’sa got hold of that song?
Baby… she took the door off the hinges. His version felt private and sensual. Hers brought the ache, the power, and a voice that sounded like she couldn’t hold anything back. 🔥

Released in late 1985, her version spent three weeks at number one on Billboard’s R&B chart and became a Quiet Storm classic.
And that ending? Ma’am.
The neighbors know everything.

This is what I love about a great cover.
You can love the original and still appreciate somebody making it their own.
I’ve got room for both.
Which version stays in your rotation? 🎶

Give me those voices. Those harmonies. Somebody singing like they’ve got something to lose. Now you’ve got my attention. My love for Quiet Storm goes back to college radio 🎙️, where I hosted from 10 PM to 1 AM, then carried that same feeling into my years at 1.FM. Those late nights were my musical heaven.

Every song and every transition mattered because I wanted you to stay right there with me. 🌙

Quiet Storm / Slow Jams Mix 2 brings that feeling back with 13 tracks, opening with Heatwave’s “Always and Forever” and moving through Lauryn Hill, Joe, Mary J. Blige, Mint Condition and more. And yes, ’N Sync made the cut. “Gone” earned its spot. 😂

There’s love, longing, grown folks business, plus those extended versions and remixes I love. I’m also planning my Quiet Storm return in January 2027. Until then, get comfortable, press play and let it ride. ❤️

Toni Braxton could make you question your whole relationship with one note. That voice? Low. Sultry. Grown.
And I’ve been hooked since the Boomerang soundtrack in 1992. 🎧

THE SETLIST brings together my favorites through 2020, from “Breathe Again” and “You’re Makin’ Me High” to “He Wasn’t Man Enough” and the songs that deserve another listen.

These are the records that stayed with me through love, heartbreak, my Quiet Storm shows and everything in between. ❤️

The “How Could an Angel Break My Heart” remix featuring Babyface absolutely belongs here. When he sings back to Toni?

Man… that’s the version for me. Then there’s “Long As I Live,” still proving what that voice can do decades later. 🎤

And just when I thought this setlist was finished, “Just Be a Man About It” reminded me I had more work to do. 😂

Toni’s catalog will do that to you.

▶️ Press play.

Your favorite might already be waiting.
