This information inspired the “Catrina” interpretation of Brigid the Goddess. I am so intrigued/curious/inspired by the festivals and traditions of The Wheel of the Year. Inspired by one of Frida Kahlo’s quote: “I tried to drown my sorrows, but the bastards learned how to swim”.
I knew I wanted to create her hair floating as if her “problems” had floated back to surface even though the drink supposedly drowned them.

Darkest everything.

I really love the quote “I want to be inside your darkest everything.” by Frida Kahlo. I suppose it was meant for her Diego.
But for me, it speaks a mindset that I connected with. I believe that when you truly go into a relationship (whether it be romantic or friendship, etc.,) knowing that person is struggling with “demons” and still you want to be the person they can try to hold onto for support, to be their anchor, unconditionally. That’s how I interpret this quote, for me, personally.

This Art piece was also inspired by “Darkest Hour” oracle card in ‘Seasons of the Witch -Yule’ deck by Authors: Juliet Diaz & Lorriane Anderson. And the artist of that deck: Giada Rose Goodman. When I saw this card I could not put it back in the deck. I sat it on my desk for however long I needed it there. I love the written words on it and the illustration is just beautiful.

Inspired by one of Frida Kahlo’s paintings “Self-Portrait with Cropped Hair
1940”.
As I worked on this Art piece I was listening to the song “Que te vaya bonito” sung by Chavela Vargas. The lyrics fit so well to what I imagine Frida must have been thinking when she painted her self-portrait. In the movie “Frida” starring Salma Hayek, Frida chops off her hair after she finds Diego and her sister together. The subsequent scene of her chopping her hair and almost exactly imitating the painting always gets me.
In my own personal life, any time I felt not “in control” or not able I to change or fix a situation, my hair was my go-to for “fixing the problem” (which didn’t always pan out lol). But it’d been a way I could “control” the outcome, somewhat. So in this interpretation, I definitely felt relatable.
