Welcome SeaLevel Stringband to World Music Weekend at Hannah Block Historic USO- Community Arts Center on the second day of the event, August 30! ☮️
Sealevel Stringband is an old-time string band based in Wilmington, NC, dedicated to keeping the tradition of Appalachian mountain music alive — even down here at sea level. The name is a nod to that contrast: music born in the hills and hollers of Appalachia, now played and shared along the Cape Fear coast. 🎻
Old-time music is rooted in the music traditions of the Southern Appalachians, traditionally played on fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, and upright bass, all acoustic, all played together rather than in solo turns. Musicians gather in a circle, locking into the same tune for verse after verse, building a hypnotic, danceable groove meant to be played together rather than performed for an audience. 🪕
That spirit of togetherness is at the heart of what the Sealevel Stringband does. They host a bi-monthly open jam session at Fermental in Wilmington, NC, welcoming pickers, fiddlers, and listeners of all skill levels. All are welcome to pull up a chair, join the circle, and take part in a tradition that’s been passed down, tune by tune, for generations. 🪗
Special thanks to Night Nurse Reggae Redemption Radio and Jesse Bradley (Kind of Cool Productions) as well as The Children's Museum of Wilmington and Wilmington Symphony Orchestra who will all be onsite doing their thing! ☮️
