"The question is, can we embrace that all of our bodies are somewhere on this ability spectrum and we move back and forth with injuries, with illness, with age, instead of deciding we’ll just pile all this fear on these bodies we deemed abnormal. What if instead, we make a world where everything flexes around our changing bodies, so we know that we’ll be valued and included as long as we’re here no matter how our embodiment changes? [...] If we can embrace that our bodies will inevitably change and plan together as a culture to make the world more accessible no matter what body we’re in, then disability isn’t so scary, because we know we’re still going to have a place and connections that are valued no matter how our bodies change over time."

Ableism is a prevalent yet too frequently overlooked form of discrimination. In our interview with Dr. Julie-Ann Scott-Pollock, she examines ableism through a scholarly lens that allows us to see its roots in the inherent fear humans carry regarding their own vulnerability and mortality. Learn more about Dr. Scott-Pollock's fascinating research on performance studies and disability studies, as well as her artistic works Gazed At: Stories of a Mortal Body, the UNCW Storytellers, Hawk Tale Players, and Just Us: Performance Troupe for Social Justice by reading this truly stellar interview.

Hi friends!

My name is Natalie, and I am this week’s storyteller of the week! I am a senior double majoring in Communication and Film Studies. This is my first performance class at UNCW and has been an experience to remember!

The book that I have gotten the opportunity to perform is “When Charley Met Emma” by Amy Webb. It is about the start of a new special friendship and the realization that being different is what makes us all special and unique. I love this story! I highly recommend checking it out in your local library!

A little bit about me: I started my own film portrait video business, love being outside in nature, and playing the ukulele. When I graduate I hope to work on real movie and TV sets!
My name is Amy Offtermatt, and I am a Senior Communication Studies major. This is my first semester being a part of the UNCW Storytellers, and it's been a great semester with the troupe! I never thought that I could see myself being a storyteller, but I couldn’t be happier to provide a memorable experience for the kids. This semester I am performing “Peanuts Emergency” by Cristina Salat. When nobody comes to pick Peanut up after school, she tries to remember and follow all the safety rules her family taught her. The book delivers a valuable lesson to avoid strangers, to get help, and to be brave and keeping calm.

A little about myself, I love spending time outdoors, playing sports, creativity, going to new places, learning new things, spending time with friends and family.
Take care!
Amy
This week we finalized our rehearsal and prepared our stories for our FIRST performance next week! We are so beyond excited to see your little faces again and share these awesome stories we found for you! Be sure to tune in to zoom at 1pm February 24th.
In the meantime, don't forget to wear your mask, wash your hands, and keep social distancing!
COM-211 Storytelling and Culture is ready to kick off the semester! We are so excited to be in-person with Professor Scott-Pollock! Stay tuned this semester and see our stories come to life. Happy Tuesday Seahawks!
This week our UNCW Storytellers are reviewing their stories and starting the memorization process. We memorize our stories in order to promote literacy and to make sure the author’s words come through in our performances. After we are confident in our knowledge of our story, the next step is coming up with fun interactions with our audience (you!!) to truly bring these stories to life!
Hi everyone!

My name is Danny Alexander and I am a junior Communication Studies major. This is my second semester being a part of the UNCW Storytellers and I couldn’t be more excited to return! I loved to be able to perform stories for y’all, and I’m thrilled to have that opportunity again. This semester I am reading “The Paper Bag Princess” by Robert Munsch, which is a book that I grew up with! I love how clever and driven Elizabeth is as a character and I cannot wait for some of you to experience this story for the first time!

In my free time, I really love to hang out with my friends and watch different movies from all over the world. I also love to listen to music and collect vinyl records. When I get the chance, I enjoy going to the beach at night to see the moon rise above the water.

Have a great week everyone!

Danny
Join us April 7th for our stories that deconstruct our ideas of difference in the pursuit of social justice.
