Hi! My name is Jordan Hernly and I am a senior Communication Studies major. This semester, I will be performing "How To Catch A Mermaid." This story is teaches a lesson that you should treat others the way you would want to be treated and to be the bigger person. I am super excited to be performing at the elementary schools! Something interesting about me is that I do Architectural Designing for a custom home builder in Wilmington, NC. My dream is to have my own custom home building company in the future one day!

Hi! My name is Riley Dodson and I am senior Communication Studies major and Digital Art minor. This is my second semester with the UNCW Storytellers and I'm looking forward to sharing our stories to some in-person audiences this semester. I am passionate about seeing the world and am planning on spending 6 months or so traveling Europe after I graduate before starting a position with corporate event planning and travel. In the meantime I am passionate about hosting and take any opportunity to celebrate or get together with friends and family. I am also a second year intern with Overflow, a local college ministry and love getting to connect with other students there.

I plan to share two stories this semester. One called "Pigs Can't Fly" by Ben Cort and another called "Mrs. McBloom Clean Up Your Classroom!" by Kelly Dipucchio. Both of these stories were staples in my house growing up and I'm looking forward to introducing them to our audiences.

Hey everyone! My name is Gabe Thomas, and I am a senior majoring in Communication Studies hoping to work in sales after graduating. Hello, my name is Waleed Zaman and my major is communication studies with an emphasis in IMC and I love to watch sports. I recently came back from Las Vegas and hit on a 6 team parlay bet. I like to bet on sports and I love to travel. Something about me: I went to a yankees game this summer and I plan to go to every stadium around the US.

Hi everyone! My name is Melinda Pickard and I am a senior Psychology major at UNCW. I joined the UNCW Storytellers because of my love of working with children. I have been babysitting on and off for years, and something about the energy of children puts the brightest smile on my face. I hope to do the same for the sweet kids when I perform my book, "Three Cheers for Tacky", by Helen Lester, and "Ferdinand", by Munro Leaf. Something interesting about me is my one year old husky puppy, who is my ray of sunshine. His name is Kobe, after Kobe Bryant. I love to wake surf at the lake, tan at the beach, and spend time with my friends and family. I look forward to the semester performing for the kids and finally being back in the classroom!

Hello everybody! My name is Caden Ward and I am a senior here at UNCW. I am a Communication Studies major and hope to work alongside a college or professional sports team in the future. I like to travel and would love to do more of that after graduation. The story I will be performing is called “the Day Roy Riegels Ran the Wrong Way” by Dan Gutman. This book tells the story of a football that ran the wrong way in a game and cost his team the win, only to realize that mistakes are not the end of the world.

This means that my dream is to become a teacher, and I am very excited to be performing with the storytellers this fall! The story I will tell is "Big Bad Wolf is Good", by Simon Puttock. This is a fun story from the perspective of the Big Bad Wolf and it may persuade you to believe differently about this classic villain.

Hi everyone! My name is Molly Remillard. I am a senior Communication Studies major. Something interesting about me is I am from Southern New Hampshire (near Boston). I am also very comfortable in a classroom setting because my mom is a first grade teacher! I have also worked as a substitute teacher, camp counselor and nannied/babysat for the past six years. My love for working with children is what made me interested in the UNCW Storytellers and I am so excited! I will be preforming a story titled "There Might Be Lobsters" By Carolyn Crimi. This tells a story of a Eleanor and her dog Sukie. It shows Sukie's thoughts and fears as a small dog on a big beach and how she can overcome her fear. This story is close to my heart because I grew up near the coast of New Hampshire and lobsters are a New England staple.

My name is Maria Ickes, and I am a senior majoring in Nursing and Communication Studies. I am very excited to be a part of the UNCW Storytellers and to share the joys and excitement of performance and literature with everyone. Something interesting about me is that I finished part of my UNCW student career alongside my mom who wanted to become a teacher. She graduated from Watson College of Education in May. In my free time, I love surfing, singing, playing guitar, drawing, and gardening. I hope to be a NICU or Community Health Nurse when I graduate. This semester, I will be performing the story "Last Stop on Market Street" by Matt de la Pena. The story follow a young boy who learns to appreciate the everyday beauties in life while on a bus ride with his Nana. I'm excited to share this touching story with you all!

Hi everyone! My name is Hope Mungall and I am your storyteller of the week! I am currently a senior and will be graduating this spring with a degree in Communication and a minor in studio art. As a first time storyteller I was very nervous to take this class and perform in front of an audience, but I loved every moment of it! The book I performed throughout the semester was, “After the Fall: How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again” by Dan Santat. This book teaches the kids to never give up and to embrace your fears because it could lead to something greater! I think this story is great and has a very unexpected ending, feel free to check it out in your library! A little bit about me: I love running, cooking, hanging out with friends and family, and watching tik toks!
Hi friends! My name is Natalie, and I am this week’s storyteller of the week! I am a senior double majoring in Communication and Film Studies. This is my first performance class at UNCW and has been an experience to remember! The book that I have gotten the opportunity to perform is “When Charley Met Emma” by Amy Webb. It is about the start of a new special friendship and the realization that being different is what makes us all special and unique. I love this story! I highly recommend checking it out in your local library! A little bit about me: I started my own film portrait video business, love being outside in nature, and playing the ukulele. When I graduate I hope to work on real movie and TV sets!
My name is Amy Offtermatt, and I am a Senior Communication Studies major. This is my first semester being a part of the UNCW Storytellers, and it's been a great semester with the troupe! I never thought that I could see myself being a storyteller, but I couldn’t be happier to provide a memorable experience for the kids. This semester I am performing “Peanuts Emergency” by Cristina Salat. When nobody comes to pick Peanut up after school, she tries to remember and follow all the safety rules her family taught her. The book delivers a valuable lesson to avoid strangers, to get help, and to be brave and keeping calm. A little about myself, I love spending time outdoors, playing sports, creativity, going to new places, learning new things, spending time with friends and family. Take care! Amy
This week we finalized our rehearsal and prepared our stories for our FIRST performance next week! We are so beyond excited to see your little faces again and share these awesome stories we found for you! Be sure to tune in to zoom at 1pm February 24th. In the meantime, don't forget to wear your mask, wash your hands, and keep social distancing!
COM-211 Storytelling and Culture is ready to kick off the semester! We are so excited to be in-person with Professor Scott-Pollock! Stay tuned this semester and see our stories come to life. Happy Tuesday Seahawks!
This week our UNCW Storytellers are reviewing their stories and starting the memorization process. We memorize our stories in order to promote literacy and to make sure the author’s words come through in our performances. After we are confident in our knowledge of our story, the next step is coming up with fun interactions with our audience (you!!) to truly bring these stories to life!
Hi everyone! My name is Danny Alexander and I am a junior Communication Studies major. This is my second semester being a part of the UNCW Storytellers and I couldn’t be more excited to return! I loved to be able to perform stories for y’all, and I’m thrilled to have that opportunity again. This semester I am reading “The Paper Bag Princess” by Robert Munsch, which is a book that I grew up with! I love how clever and driven Elizabeth is as a character and I cannot wait for some of you to experience this story for the first time! In my free time, I really love to hang out with my friends and watch different movies from all over the world. I also love to listen to music and collect vinyl records. When I get the chance, I enjoy going to the beach at night to see the moon rise above the water. Have a great week everyone! Danny
