The color temperature of our skin - the body’s largest organ, our outward layer, protecting + breathing with us, allowing the sensation of touch - has shaped history for humanity. We are finally starting to see ripples of change in our lifetime, despite the hardships faced by those who have been + continue to be brave enough to stand up for what is right.
The fact is, we shouldn’t be judged or oppressed because of a defining characteristic that makes the human race so beautiful. We are a color spectrum of earth tones, the most intricate palette. And if we could only focus on lifting one another up - creating instead of breaking each other down - imagine what a phenomenal work of art this world would be.
We love you. We are here for you. We stand with you.

Art really seems to be imitating life recently. The amount of diverse and brave art being shared on all our various platforms is heartening - it truly rings of some important changes in our society and how we view creativity.
β€’
Since Monday’s are pretty quite here, we wanted to take a moment to reflect and encourage artists who might be second-guessing themselves to go for it. Times are changing, and we are along for the ride.

We are excited to share with you a preview of the compelling work by our studio artist, Danny Starr.
Danny is a natural creative with a passion for the human figure, symmetry in form, and incorporating sacred geometry into the symbolism of his work. He has been showing and exhibiting art around the country from California to Massachusetts and recently had his first solo art show at the Artwork Network Gallery in Denver, Colorado.
Danny’s work often combines a classical technique with modern style. His range of mediums is diverse, often creating realistic oil paintings and stylistic ink drawings within the same bodies of work. With a clever eye, he is able to produce a harmony between the natural and conceptual, creating works that are vulnerable and honest.
β€’
Come see Danny’s working studio and view original pieces hanging at Valhalla this evening @ 5PM.

Jenny is a poet and yogi spreading light and awareness of the inner self through the written word, the practice of meditation, yoga and mindful retreats. Although Jenny’s journey brought her to Wilmington, her soul shines on both the East and West Coast. Through words, The Vuja De reveals universal truths about the human experience, encouraging us to take off the masks we wear every day and follow our inner child down the rabbit hole.

Addie Jo is a self-taught watercolor artist based in Savannah, Georgia. She has exhibited her work at Cameron Art Museum and at the Wilma W. Daniels Gallery at CFCC and is the winner of the Encore’s Best of 2019 Award for Best Female Artist. Ever since she found watercolor in 2016, AJ has painted many different subjects but fell in love with painting faces and figures. Creating her portraits involves an organic process bearing little intention of what emotion they will exude, letting go of control and allowing the watercolor to tell a story.

06/27/2020

Howardena Pindell (b. 1943) is an American painter and mixed media artist. Her work explores texture, color, structures, and the process of making art. It is often political, addressing the intersecting issues of racism, feminism, violence, slavery, and exploitation.
She is known for the wide variety of techniques and materials used in her artwork; she has created abstract paintings, collages, video drawings, and process art.
Following her graduation from the MFA program at Yale University in 1967, Pindell began a career in the Arts Education Department at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. She began to work with abstraction and collaging, finding inspiration in the work of fellow grad school student Nancy Murata. By the 1970s, she began developing a unique style, rooted in the use of dots and reminiscent of minimalism and pointillism.
In 1972, Pindell co-founded the Artists in Residence (A.I.R) Gallery, which was the first artist-directed gallery for female artists in the United States. The gallery allowed women artists to curate their own exhibitions, allowing them the freedom to take risks with their work in ways that commercial galleries would not.
In the mid-1970s, Pindell began traveling abroad as a guest speaker and lecturer, but returned to New York in 1977 as associate curator of MoMA's department of Prints and Illustrated Books. She continued to spend her nights creating her own pieces, drawing inspiration from many of the exhibits hosted by MoMA, especially the museum's collection of Akan batakari tunics in the exhibit African Textiles and Decorative Arts.
Currently, Pindell is a professor of art at Stony Brook University, where she has taught since 1979. She was a visiting professor in the art department at Yale University from 1995-1999.

06/15/2020

Jacob Lawrence (1917 - 2000) was a painter, storyteller, interpreter, and educator known for his strong portrayal of African-American life. Lawrence referred to his style as dynamic cubism, influenced by the shapes and colors of Harlem. He brought the African-American experience to life juxtaposing muted blacks and browns with vivid colors.
Among the best-known 20th-century African-American painters, Lawrence was 23 years old when he gained national recognition with his 60-panel Migration Series, painted on cardboard. The series depicted the Great Migration of African Americans from the rural South to the urban North. A part of this series was featured in a 1941 issue of Fortune. The collection is now held by two museums: the odd-numbered paintings are on exhibit in the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., and the even-numbered are on display at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York.
In October 1943, Lawrence was drafted in the United States Coast Guard and served as a public affairs specialist with the first racially integrated crew on the USCGC Sea Cloud. He continued to paint and sketch while in the Coast Guard, documenting the experience of war around the world. He produced 48 paintings during this time, all of which have been lost. He achieved the rank of petty officer third class. After the war, he created his famous War Series.
Lawrence’s work remains in permanent collections in museums across the country, and is widely known for his modernist illustrations of everyday life as well as epic African-American historical narratives and figures.

Fine Art For All

Valhalla Gallery is a working studio and boutique aimed to bring a flavor of the Denver art scene to downtown Wilmington, North Carolina.

As a career oil painter and student of the Angel Academy of Art in Florence, Italy, Valhalla Gallery owner Danny Starr has honed his technique in classical oil painting, allowing his art to transcend mediums into digital illustration and graphic design. Danny regularly shows at galleries nationwide and is currently working on a new series - β€˜Subtle Bodies.’

Valhalla Gallery is set to open summer 2020. Artists interested in showcasing their work at Valhalla may send an inquiry to: [email protected]
