Big Dawg Productions is pleased to announce a second round of auditions for their upcoming production of “Lysistrata”, by Aristophanes.

The play will be directed by Beth Swindell.

Auditions will take place on Monday, June 27th, at 7PM at the Hannah Block Historic USO/Community Arts Center, 120 S. 2nd St., Wilmington NC.

Roles are available for 10 actors of any gender identity (female, male, non-binary, trans, etc.), ages 20 to 60 in appearance. All ethnicities are encouraged to audition. YOU MUST BE 18 OR OLDER TO BE CONSIDERED. “Lysistrata” deals with sexual themes.

“Lysistrata” will be performed at the Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts on Aug. 4-7 and 11-14.

Synopsis of the play:
This ancient Greek comedy by Aristophanes, originally performed in classical Athens in 411 BC, is a comic account of a woman's extraordinary mission to end the Peloponnesian War between Greek city states by denying all the men of the land any sex, which was the only thing they truly and deeply desired. Lysistrata persuades the women of the warring cities to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands and lovers as a means of forcing the men to negotiate peace—a strategy, however, that inflames the battle between the sexes.

Actors will portray multiple roles.

I'm looking for two to four people who can help with loading in a set for a play tomorrow morning (Monday, April 11) at Thalian Hall for Big Dawg Productions, a local non-profit theater company. This involves unloading prop boxes and flats (walls meant for set building), carrying them up a flight of stairs, and then helping to put the flats up. Most of the work is getting them up the stairs. Can pay 10/hour plus comp tickets to the production, which opens Thursday and runs two weekends.
Please text or call Steve Vernon at 910-612-2239 if interested.

****AUDITIONS!!****

Big Dawg Productions is pleased to announce upcoming auditions for their presentation of “School Girls; or, The African Mean Girls Play”, written by Jocelyn Bioh.

Auditions will be held on Monday, April 18th and Tuesday, April 19th at 7pm, at the former Castle Street Playhouse, 613 Castle St., Wilmington NC.

Performances will take place Thursday, June 16th - Sunday, June 19th, and Thursday, June 23rd- Sunday, June 26th. All performances will take place at the Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts, in the Ruth & Bucky Stein Studio Theatre, Wilmington, NC.

The production will be directed by Fracaswell Hyman.
Auditions will consist of cold reads from the script.

Roles are available for six Black women high school aged in appearance (actresses from 16 and up encouraged to audition) and two Black women, 40’s in appearance (8 roles total).

Character Breakdowns:

PAULINA:
18 years old, the most popular girl in school, and she knows it. Beautiful, talented, vindictive and yet somehow lovable.

ERICKA:
18 years old, biracial with light skin. A sweet, enchanting and friendly transfer student from the US. NOTE: Role requires light skin, and ability to sing.

AMA:
18 years old, Paulina’s best friend. Sweet, loyal yet beginning to question Paulina’s treatment of her peers.

NANA:
16 years old. Quiet, simple, and struggling with her relationship with food and snacking. Her weight makes her a frequent target of Paulina’s.

MERCY:
16 years old. Witty sidekick of Gifty. Eager to remain on Paulina’s good side.

GIFTY:
16 years old. Mercy’s co-hort, eager to appear “cool”.

HEADMISTRESS FRANCIS:
40’s. Headmistress of Aburi Girls Boarding School. Loves her students and will do whatever she can to protect and uplift them.

ELOISE AMPONSAH:
40’s. Former classmate of Francis, and former Miss Ghana, 1966. Now a recruiter for the Miss Ghana pageant.

The play description is as follows:
In 1986, Paulina, the reigning queen bee at Ghana’s most exclusive boarding school, has her sights set on the Miss Global Universe pageant. But the arrival of Ericka, a new student with undeniable talent and beauty, captures the attention of the pageant recruiter—and Paulina’s hive-minded friends. This buoyant and biting comedy explores the universal similarities (and glaring differences) facing teenage girls across the globe. The nasty-teen comedy genre emerges wonderfully refreshed and even deepened by its immersion in a world it never considered. Beneath the infectious silliness of the play’s adopted genre, the ugly question of internalized racism lurks, with no underlining and without sacrificing laughs.

Ok...we've kept you in suspense long enough! Are you ready???

Below are ALL the show dates for our 2022 season! Oh! And don't forget to get your tix for "Always a Bridesmaid"....it opens in less than ONE MONTH!!

Happy Tuesday everyone!

Always a Bridesmaid
April 14-17 and 21-24
By Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope, Jamie Wooten

In this hilarious comedic romp, four friends have sworn to keep the promise they made on the night of their Senior Prom: to be in each other’s weddings…no matter what. More than twenty years later, these Southern friends-for-life are still making “the long walk” for each other, determined to honor that vow. Forsaking all others, in sickness and in health, they repeatedly struggle to stage the perfect wedding in spite of fistfights at the altar, runaway brides and the mistaken, and unfortunate, release of a flock of white doves on the first day of hunting season. If you’ve ever elbowed a stranger out of the way to catch a bride’s bouquet, seriously questioned the mental stability of the duo saying “I do” or been forced to wear the world’s ugliest bridesmaid dress, this deliriously funny show is definitely for you.

By William Goldman, based on the novel by Stephen King

MISERY follows successful romance novelist Paul Sheldon, who is rescued from a car crash by his “number one fan,” Annie Wilkes, and wakes up captive in her secluded home. While Paul is convalescing, Annie reads his latest book and becomes enraged when she discovers the author has killed off her favorite character, Misery Chastain. Annie forces Paul to write a new Misery novel, and he quickly realizes Annie has no intention of letting him go anywhere. The irate Annie has Paul writing as if his life depends on it, and it does.

Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol
Dec. 8-11 and 15-18
By Tom Mula

Big Dawg is proud to present their biannual production of this modern Christmas classic. “Marley was dead, to begin with…” —and what happens to Ebenezer Scrooge’s mean, sour, pruney old business partner after that? Chained and shackled, Marley is condemned to a hellish eternity. He’s even given his own private tormentor: a malicious little hell-sprite who thoroughly enjoys his work. Desperate, Marley accepts his one chance to free himself: To escape his own chains, he must first redeem Scrooge. So begins a journey of laughter and terror, redemption and renewal, during which Scrooge’s heart, indeed, is opened; but not before Marley—in this irreverent, funny and deeply moving story—discovers his own.
